What you'll do
NOTE: $750 price includes the first 4 guests! Come aboard the 85 foot (25 meter) research vessel Zephyr for an educational tour on this unique working expedition ship. Based in Pleasant Harbor marina, this tour will take us out into picturesque Hood Canal with a backdrop of snow capped Olympic mountains. We'll start with a tour of the vessel, its living spaces, engine room and the equipment on deck. We'll do a safety brief with instruction on how to don lifejackets, describe line handling, and with help from volunteers, depart the dock for a cruise in the fjord. Captain Ron will invite you into the pilothouse to share the workings of the marine electronics: VHF Radios, RADAR and navigation software. First Mate Ashley will spread out snacks and refreshments prepared in the galley. Bring your camera, binoculars, all-weather clothing, sunglasses and a sense of adventure; you never know what you might run into. We often see eagles, orcas, seals, sea lions, herons and porpoises. Come away with knowledge about ways marine scientists are studying the Salish Sea and stories of Zephyr's adventures operating in the open Pacific and Alaska.
Zephyr is an actual working research vessel and guests are expected to take care with respect to the working environment, no running, wear proper footwear. Contact us for actual pricing, or if a different time works better for you.

Ashley and Ron have been working on the water together for 14 years, they are both licensed by the US Coast Guard to operate vessels up to 200 Tons on near coastal waters. Back in '07-08 they were working a towing and rescue service on the Columbia River Bar, also known as the Graveyard of the Pacific where they rescued boaters in trouble on that notoriously dangerous body of water. Research work on Zephyr started in summer of 2015. They are both SCUBA instructors and their favorite hobby is cave diving. They are passionate about the worlds oceans and their day job is taking science teams out on Zephyr for environmental and fisheries research.

Where you'll be
Our tour starts in Pleasant Harbor in Brinnon WA a bay surrounded on three sides by forest, moves into the Hood Canal, which is actually a fjord, up into Dabob Bay, then across to the Toandos Peninsula and then North up to the Kitsap Naval base. Our tour route may change due to Navy vessel activity and submarine movement. From Kitsap we will travel down to Seabeck, and then back across the canal to PH. About 30 miles on the water.
