Power Carve A Log Into A Bowl

Johnson City, North Carolina, United States

Experience hosted by Brenden

  1. 4 hours
  2. Hosted in English

What you'll do

We start off with an introduction to the tools and a discussion about safety. Then students select a piece of wood to make a bowl from. I will show you how to get started and the process for making sure the bowl turns out well. And I will be carving right alongside you so you have a visual guide for every step. You will shape the outside and carve the inside of the bowl. After the carving we move on to sanding down to a silky smooth surface and then finishing with natural food safe finishes. Then students get to take their bowl home and enjoy it for a lifetime.

I source local hardwoods and typically have a variety to pick from. Some examples are box elder, red oak, white oak, black walnut, maple, and poplar. So your final piece will be a permanent piece of the mountains to take home with you.

We will be working in the yard at my home. Seating is available if you need to take a rest. I can also tell you about some of the other fun things to do in the area.
Other things to note
Just be prepared to have a lot of fun with power tools. You will definitely get dusty but that is part if the fun.

I'm a professional woodworker and bowl carver. I teach classes locally at several venues as well as at festivals and cultural centers in the region. I am known for the unique style of my bowls and vessels and have been exhibited in local art centers and various events. I've been teaching classes and various things for over 20 years now and I'm very comfortable in that role.

Where you'll be

It is my home so it is a comfortable environment with everything that is needed to carve the bowls from a selection of locally and responsibly sourced hardwood blanks to the tools we will need. In case of rain I have an alternative location we can go to. It gets warm during the summer, but it is also peaceful. It is pretty common to see deer wandering through the neighborhood.

I am centrally located ~ one hour from Boone, Bristol, or Asheville.

Do this! This was so much better than we expected we had the best time our bowls came out beautifully. Brendan is a magical host his knowledge kindness and the ability to teach you is top notch. We would go back and do this again we also would like to do his blacksmithing foraging that he offers but was not aware that we could do that on the same day or that he was the same host that offered that. His wife his son and Astrid the wonder Basset hound just added to the wonderful experience that he provides.

Do this! Brenden is amazing. He knows his stuff and makes it look easy. What makes him amazing is that he gives enough help and tips to make it fun, easy, and 100% your piece. We are so proud of our bowls. We would absolutely do this again. Heed the warning to dress accordingly! You will get covered in sawdust.

This is an experience where the instructor lets you use your imagination of what you want to do with the bowl. However, he will help you and guide you when you need it. He is friendly and has a great personality that seems to get along with everyone.

Hubby and I did this experience for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. Brenden was SUPER helpful in guiding and helping when I had challenges. I am a power tools novice but the safety instructions and prep talk put me at ease. I love how well our projects came out and we would definitely do this again if/when we come back to Johnson City.

Our class with Brenden was great! He instructed us how to safely and properly use the the power tools and equipment. When asked and needed he helped in areas that we were challenged. An even greater experience since we got to take out pieces home so we can enjoy for years to come!

Brenden is a great instructor and provides you such a wonderful experience. Both me and my fiancee were very happy with the bowls we created. Brendan's dog, Astrid, was a delight.
