What you'll do

Take a break from the imperial grandeur of Vienna's historic old town and discover its secret alleyways and hidden squares instead. We leave the busy main roads behind us and and will find an abundance of quaint little corners that are otherwise easily missed. Hidden passageways used as shortcuts by the locals will take us into picturesque courtyards and tranquil side streets.

This tour is about oddities, quirky stories of the city's past and the beauty of Vienna beyond the main attractions. We start on its most Italian "piazza" and will amongst others marvel at some fine Baroque illusional painting, visit the place where Mozart got a kick in his gifted backside and stroll through the former Jewish heart of Vienna. We look at the city's most famous doorway and discover Beethoven's neighborhood. Finally, the "Muse who's had it" will introduce us to Vienna's scientific heart and academic hall of fame. Always walking the most charming alleys along the way we'll stay off the big tourist tracks. The tour ends at the main university of Vienna.

! To enter the university we will need a vaccination certificate and ID card !

Hi! I'm Hannes, Austrian born and Viennese by choice.

I studied tourism management and started working as tour guide across Europe after my graduation. What a job that was! I had the opportunity to learn so much about European history and to explore numerous cities and regions. After a couple of years on the road I decided to return home. Back in Vienna I successfully completed a two-year degree to become a certified Austria guide. I have been raving about Vienna’s history and beauty ever since

Where you'll be

We will be walking through the old town of Vienna. We avoid the main attractions and focus on hidden alleys and squares. You will experience that those areas often have the flair of a rural town rather than an international capital of almost two million people. We don't come back to the meeting point but finish at the main university on Schottenring (10 min walk from Hofburg Palace).

Whether you’ve been to Vienna ten times or this is your first trip, this tour is perfect for you! The tour leads to alleys and courtyards I never would have found ( let alone learned the history behind). Hannes kept the tour interesting with his story-telling by telling both historical accounts and urban legends of the different locations.

Very interesting and informative tour, we saw parts of the city we never would have found on our own! Hannes is very knowledgeable about the city and you can tell he very much likes to share his knowledge and the history. The tour is long and a lot of walking so bring some snacks for the way to keep your energy level up.

Hannes is a wonderful tour guide. I've lived in Vienna for awhile and still had never been to some of the places he took our group! He has a sense of humor and tells anecdotes that nicely balance myth and reality.
