Getting to know Rocinha and its Culture

Copacabana, Brazil

Experience hosted by Eduardo & Team

3.5 hours
Up to 8 people
Hosted in Portuguese, English, Spanish

What you'll do

The focus of this experience is to show the favela for what it really is and how beautiful it can be. We'll walk around and get to know what life is like in there. Our tour starts at our meeting point in Copacabana. From there, we'll go to Rocinha and explore the place and its stories as we walk. As we go around, we are going to stop for photos and to explain the local history and culture. We will visit viewpoints and see murals and graffiti painted by local artists and we'll also show the different social works that exist inside. We want you to see that the favelas are also a place of affection and respect, a place with a strong community bond that we hardly see anymore anywhere else. And we want to take you so you can see what a fantastic place it is.

I was born and raised in the city of Rio, more specifically in Copacabana. I love my city. I started working as a guide about 11 years ago and my tour partners and I love to share the beauty and stories of this fantastic city. I have been to many places in the world and I have been in contact with many different cultures. Together with my team, we will show that Rocinha can be a very special and charming place.

This tour was very informative and an essential part of a trip to Brazil to understand the culture more. I felt safe the entire time and our tour guide Eduardo had a comfortable pace where we had time to stop, take pictures and ask questions. I would absolutely recommend this guide.

What an amazing experience! We learned so much about the favela and felt quite safe with Edmundo. He was very knowledgeable and knew his way around very well! Our favorite part was the rooftop view- we took some awesome photos! It was also really nice that Edmundo helped us get acquainted with the subway- as a traveler who will be in Rio for a few months, this was super helpful!

Ótima visita a maior favela da América Latina. Desde o início do passeio, a equipe foi fantástica, explicando a história de todos os lugares por onde passávamos. Experiência maravilhosa. Recomendo!!!

We have been in Brazil for the last 4 months ... and seen most of the major attractions & places of interest. This is THE BEST immersive tour we have experienced in Rio. And it is also the most educational for us. It is surprising to learn that up to about a third of the 7+ million residents in Rio de Janeiro live in over 700+ favelas ... often surrounded by more affluent neighbourhoods and communities. The economic & social disparity is stark. However, we are impressed by the efforts of government agencies involved in helping to improve the living conditions of those living in favelas. Our sincere gratitude to Edmundo for safely walking us from the top of the favela to the bottom ... through a labyrinth of narrow alleys and streets. The views from the top are spectacular!!! Taking a local small bus from Copacabana to Rocinha and an underground train back to Copacabana from Rocinha provided us with the opportunity to travel like the locals. Edmundo is one of the best guides we have ever had. He is patient, kind and caring ... always looking out for our safety and well-being. Please forgive us for saying that you have not truly seen Rio until you visit a favela. Cheers!

We loved the tour. It was super interesting but you need to understand what to expect. Favelas is place with their own culture, rules and story, it’s not the place of interest by itself. But you can see how people live there, touch it’s culture and interact with them. You can come alone, but with local guide it’s safer and we like that he knows everybody there and can interact you directly with local life.

I had an amazing experience visiting Rochina. Alberto showed me the true life of the day to day Brazilians living in the favela. I had some doubts about safety at first, but Alberto made sure I felt comfortable and showed there is nothing to worry about. Will definitely recommend this experience. mto obrg!
