What you'll do

We will start with some of the interesting history of the studio space. Then I will get you situated on the wheel and show you how to properly secure your lump of clay. After the clay is secured we start the wheel spinning nice and fast. I will show you how to center the clay which is a very important (and frustrating) stage of making pottery on the wheel. After we successfully center the clay, you will explore how the clay moves and reacts to your touch. We will work to form a simple shape such as a bowl or cup. To finish off we will do some clean up of the form and remove the piece from the wheel in order to start experimenting with the next piece. You can expect to get to practice with around 6 lumps of clay (more if you are ambitious) and most people will create 2-3 pieces by the end of the session.

Pieces will be professionally finished, fired, and glazed after the experience. This process takes at least 3 weeks. After the pieces are finished you can pickup in the studio or they can be shipped. Shipping costs are paid by the guest.
Other things to note
Come wearing clothes that you don't mind getting messy. We will provide aprons. If you have long hair plan to have a hair tie or a way to secure your hair back. Trim long nails if you are able.

Hello! I absolutely love working in clay and have spent the last 2 years teaching ceramics at a community art program in downtown San Francisco. Previous to teaching wheel throwing and sculpting, I worked at a ceramic supplier where I gained immense knowledge on everything to do with Ceramics! Now I am following my dream of having a home studio and gallery space. I would love nothing more than welcoming curious and adventurous folks in to my studio to learn the joys of working in clay. My studio is located on the ground level of a beautiful Victorian built in the late 1800's!

Where you'll be

We will be in the ground level studio and gallery of a Victorian house. The space was a club house of some kind for the previous owners and they would hold various events in the space in the early 1900s. We are in the process of researching more about what they were exactly doing. We found artifacts and photos from that time and we know they referred to their group as X?X. Which is the inspiration for the current name of studio and gallery space.

We absolutely LOVED it. We have never done it before but after Marieke showed us how to work with the clay, we took off on the artistic journey. Clay took us on that journey. My husband and I created beautiful pieces. We even recreated a " Ghost" movie scene. It was romantic date night for us and we are so glad we chose this awesome experience that we will cheer forever. Marieke shared with us the story about this beautiful Victorian house where her studio is and we got fascinated by the story and puzzle that still needs to be solved. We highly recommend this experience.

We met Marieke with our 11 year old daughter and left feeling so inspired of what we created and just how good it felt to create pottery. She was sweetly patient and gave enough breathing room for us to enjoy our creative curiosity. This was a great adventure for our family to break out of our COVID routine and learn something new in a space that offered special precautions (large door to studio was wide open, lots of fresh air while we all stayed masked). We made about two pieces each within the 2 hours. Thank you Marieke.

Marieke curated such a personalized, congenial, & edifying creative experience. It was so neat to be able to learn a new, hands-on skill, be in space with a quirky/nuanced-rich history, & create with my small group of family. Marieke went beyond our expectations to facilitate a time that worked for the three of us, welcomed us into her studio with some beverages & dessert options, shared the story of the building, put COVID safety & distancing practices into place, & helped our crew of heavy-handed beginners create :).

Highly recommend & eager to take part again! Thank you, Marieke!

wow! Our time with Marieke was absolutely perfect. Of course making things with clay proves to be a therapeutic experience. Even more impressive was Marieke's ability to teach. She has an easy ability to make the process accessible wonderfully allowing one to personally work with the process, while also supporting in the perfect timing. We left with three pieces each that we are very happy with. We would do it again and highly recommend it!

Our group of three had a great time at the experience and all had something we created and really liked to bring home with. Marieke was very friendly and did a great job giving us instructions to pottery as two of us are doing this for the first time. She is also always there to help throughout the time whenever we needed it. Would highly recommend!

My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves. Marieke was kind, knowledgeable and skilled at her craft. Working with the clay was both challenging and calming. We would love to do this again.
