What you'll do

We will start with some of the interesting history of the studio space. Then I will get you situated on the wheel and show you how to properly secure your lump of clay. After the clay is secured we start the wheel spinning nice and fast. I will show you how to center the clay which is a very important (and frustrating) stage of making pottery on the wheel. After we successfully center the clay, you will explore how the clay moves and reacts to your touch. We will work to form a simple shape such as a bowl or cup. To finish off we will do some clean up of the form and remove the piece from the wheel in order to start experimenting with the next piece. You can expect to get to practice with around 6 lumps of clay (more if you are ambitious) and most people will create 2-3 pieces by the end of the session.

Pieces will be professionally finished, fired, and glazed after the experience. This process takes at least 3 weeks. After the pieces are finished you can pickup in the studio or they can be shipped. Shipping costs are paid by the guest.
Other things to note
Come wearing clothes that you don't mind getting messy. We will provide aprons. If you have long hair plan to have a hair tie or a way to secure your hair back. Trim long nails if you are able.

Hello! I absolutely love working in clay and have spent the last 2 years teaching ceramics at a community art program in downtown San Francisco. Previous to teaching wheel throwing and sculpting, I worked at a ceramic supplier where I gained immense knowledge on everything to do with Ceramics! Now I am following my dream of having a home studio and gallery space. I would love nothing more than welcoming curious and adventurous folks in to my studio to learn the joys of working in clay. My studio is located on the ground level of a beautiful Victorian built in the late 1800's!

Where you'll be

We will be in the ground level studio and gallery of a Victorian house. The space was a club house of some kind for the previous owners and they would hold various events in the space in the early 1900s. We are in the process of researching more about what they were exactly doing. We found artifacts and photos from that time and we know they referred to their group as X?X. Which is the inspiration for the current name of studio and gallery space.

Such a fun and unique experience. My wife and I always wanted to try out making things like clay. It wasn’t easy but no means but the amazing host helped along the way.

Marieke’s storytelling and patience made this such a wonderful experience. She let us explore the clay on our own and gave us such wonderful direction. It was a pleasure to learn from her!

Marieke did a great job by telling us about the space and its history, I thought that was a cool thing that I wasn't expecting. When it came to the pottery she was very patient when it came to teaching us, while at the same time giving you enough freedom to do your own thing and fail on your own (if you wanted to). Looking forward to picking up our pieces after they have been finished :)

We had a great time! The location was fantastic, right in the middle of the Mission and in a super interesting building. The size of the group was also perfect, we thought. Enough to share the experience with someone without feeling crowded.

Definitely recommend! Hands on fun 🤗 I walked out with 4 projects I’m proud of and can’t wait to see them glazed. Marieke was a joy and made someone with no experience (me) feel comfortable on the wheel.
