Castles & Cathedrals of the Marais

Paris, France

Experience hosted by Ellen

2 hours, Hosted in English and French

What you'll do

This is a private tour of the remnants of "old Paris" - the city that existed in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the city of hidden castles, imposing renaissance palaces & baroque mansions, medieval timbered houses, leafy courtyards hidden behind carriage doors, charming squares & public fountains.

You will learn about the city's history, its rich architectural & cultural background, through researched commentary developed by a historian. Learn how the city was transformed (1853-1870) from a medieval warren of densely overpopulated streets to a modern city with broad avenues, city squares & parks, trees....and the world's 1st system of gas lighting.

You will also see firsthand the nuances of Gothic vs Baroque architecture & art. By visiting the mansions & churches of the Marais we will see the transition from medieval Gothic to renaissance Baroque architecture & discover the rich past (and present) of this picturesque & trendy neighborhood.

Where you'll be

We will visit the hidden treasures of the Marais : medieval half-timbered houses, Gothic churches & cathedrals, Baroque mansions & squares. Hidden amongst the trendy boutiques are some of the city's oldest buildings - beautifully restored vestiges of the Middle Ages & Renaissance.
I explain the history & architecture of these buildings to provide context. I share the rich past of the Marais (as well as a few insider shopping addresses).

Ellen is Uber prepared- she is a historian and educated us about the history of the Marais to give us context for today. She is super pleasant and had created videos for us to view with amazing historical photos. She was so generous with her time.

Ellen made the Marais come alive in her storytelling. I learned so much from her. She had a slide show to teach certain things, a couple videos along the way. This was a first class expierence. I cannot recommend her enough. I saw things I would have missed if I was just walking in the neighborhood myself. She even met up with us early cause I broke my ankle and she knew I would be a bit slower and she wanted to make sure we weren't rushed at the end. She introduced us to a new sweet shop that was insanely good. She has a couple other walking tours and next time I am in Paris I will contact her for those.

My experience with Ellen was great. I got to see a a different side of Paris. She was very knowledgeable on the history of the sites and she was truly passionate. She’s also a great person, and we shared nice conversations. As a solo traveler, she even waited for me to get into my cab before heading off. I recommend this tour to anyone!!

Ellen graciously kept our appointment even though I was the only person attending. She also kindly went overtime on our appointment which was much appreciated. Highly recommended for first time visitors to Marais to orient yourself and gain an understanding of the history of the area. I had lunch at A great deli Ellen pointed out. Thanks for a lovely afternoon :)
