What you'll do

First, Mark E. Sackett the owner and his team, will welcome you to the Pressroom and Mercantile here at The Box SF, where you will step back in time absorbing our recreation of an 1850's General Store and Letterpress Printing Shop, where our oldest Press dates back to 1838! You'll get to see amazing Design and Advertising History, learn a bit about our historic Printing Presses. Then we'll head to our basement for a quick peek of our hidden private Speakeasy, "The Sipping Room"!

You'll have an opportunity to browse millions of pieces of rare ephemera, bill heads, posters, games, stamps, labels, books, advertising displays, packaging, toys and more. These all show beautiful examples of Graphic Design, Lettering, Typography, Calligraphy and Printed history! And it's all for sale!

Even people with little or no interest in these types of things have become fascinated by the space, the presses, the history and the amazing imagery that surrounds them here, and why our tagline is: "All Things Printed".

We promise you an immersive, visual experience!

I purchased this Historic Building 19 years ago. It's the former William Randolph Hearst Printing Plant where the SF Examiner was printed in the late 1920's. As a Graphic Designer/Art Director and Producer, I have been collecting Millions of Advertising Items for over 50 years. Our top floors include our Design and Vintage Bookstore as well as our Private Events and Meeting Spaces for rent! We sell the material in our Historic Mercantile to collectors around the world who love its rarity and beauty. Most of our Customers and Guests alike have said the Mercantile looks and feels like a Museum, but with nearly everything for sale, people can buy awesome gifts from $2 to as much as $20,000 There is nothing quite like The Pressroom and Mercantile here at The Box SF!

What a great experience! Visiting the Box Antique Ephemera was like entering an amazing portal to the past, unique and beautiful in every way. The rooms, furniture and items were all unique and a delight to the eyes. The vastness of the collection was more than anything that I have ever seen. And each piece was detailed and beautifully crafted/designed. Mark was friendly and informative. He has a vast knowledge of the printing process and all of the exhibition items which he has collected from every corner of the world. It's great to be in such a visually inspiring environment and talk to someone who appreciates history and graphic design. The tour also included a visit to a "secret" speakeasy room hidden in the basement. Anyone who appreciates unique places and history will love this place!

Mark is really enthusiastic about the design and the print. He shows me lots of his collections, which range from the family photos glued on the card , the ancient trademark graphics of matches, tobacco, ancient bill dollars, and initial printing machines. It's so exciting and amazing!

Attention graphic designers, ephemera fans, collage artists and anyone who is interested in the history of letterpress printing. The Box SF is a wonderful place to see thousands of letters, labels, stamps, packaging and just about any other ephemera you can think of. Everything is for sale so you can come with deep pockets or a lot of self control but either way, you will be completely amazed by this collection. Highly recommend!

Went with my coworkers at lunch time and it was a fun group outing. Mark has a vast collection of ephemera and if you like graphic design/advertising/vintage items, you will certainly find something of interest. The speakeasy was a nice addition. It is open to the public as well so I will be back to shop!
