What you'll do

I'm hosting a cultural drum and dance circle featuring Afro-Carib rhythms in January and Middle Eastern rhythms in February. I am a native of Trinidad and was married to a Turkish musician for years so both of these cultures are dear to me. I have many drums and great talented friends and I would like to help people learn more about the cultural variety and similarities of hand drumming. No experience need and there are options for not just drumming but the other accessory percussion instruments that help make a good rhythm. So there is something for everyone. We begin with an intro of hand drumming history, types of drums specific to the region then basic drumming skills of hand placement & drum strokes. Once there is enough drum vocabulary, simple traditional rhythms are taught, along with the meaning and use within that culture and the accompanying song if there is one. The circle culminates with an improv jam where guests can express any creative thoughts that has been sparked. Finally we close the circle and chat for a bit. ***During the current health crisis, all events are SDC- Social Distancing Compliant. As of Jan 4, 2021 this includes a maximum of 10 persons indoors; face masks and participants spaced a minimum of 6' apart. Refreshments will be limited to disposable hot cups for tea or coffee and individually wrapped biscuits.
