What you'll do

Experience the life of the chocolate forest on this nature hike through a pure jungle and organic cacao farm, learning all about and tasting cacao on every step of the tree-to-bar chocolate journey.
Our adventure begins on an organic cacao farm, where you will be introduced to this food of the gods while we walk through a fair-trade cacao processing operation. You’ll learn about the history of cacao from ancient civilizations, and see how it is processed today to become chocolate. You’ll get to taste everything at each step of the transformation from raw fruit to processed, roasted, and evolving forms of chocolate.
This is a nature hiking experience, and we’ll ascend to some spectacular ocean views. I’ll introduce you to the cacao forest, teeming with life as we see first-hand what makes a pure jungle, and how this is the ideal ecosystem not only for cacao but much more.
We’ll sit down at another ocean view to enjoy an intense chocolate tasting experience. This is for true chocolate lovers! I’ll serve you the original ancient chocolate, a hot drink made by the Aztecs and Mayans. Then you’ll get to try the first ‘new world’ chocolate, and learn about its evolution to modern-day. Finally, you’ll try our own European-style pure chocolates in a variety of sweetness’ to let you re-discover what real chocolate is!

Where you'll be

A private organic cacao farm & learning centre, a 4ha/10acre space located between the towns of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Our property fronts Cahuita National Park with plenty of views of the park, ocean and the last living reef in the region. We are located in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by cacao, pure jungle and forest. We are in the absolute midst of nature enveloped in life with the many resident monkeys, sloths and other animals.

Doing the Cacao tour with Ahki has been a wonderful experience. A part from learning a lot about the cacao, its cultivation and the transformation process into chocolate, we discovered an amazing NGO and a family with a special purpose. The passion of Ahki has guided us through the history, the politics and the science of cacao plantation in Coata Rica, leaving to us the curiosity to further discover this fascinating world. Very happy to have chosen him over the touristic offers you get in Cahuita/Puerto Viejo. Also the price was very competitive comparing to other tours. I don't even want mention how fantastic was his chocolate testing....top! If you are in the Caribe Sur, we strongly recommend it!!

We had the greatest experience with Akhi. We arrived half an hour late but he didn’t mind at all. He even asked us if it was okay to go a little overtime. With the most soothing voice you could imagine he told us everything about his home, the cacao and the jungle always answering our questions. There were a lot of wild animals around and the garden was full on plants, fruits and spices that he made us try. If you got the chance to come here, then do it! We can’t recommend him enough.

I am so glad we chose Ahki’s tour above the others offered in the area! The passion and knowledge he has is unmatched. It was so special to have the tour personalized to what we were specifically interested in! We learned about chocolate yes, but also about biodiversity, social justice for the Bibi indigenous people, Costa Rican history, etc. A beautiful family with such beautiful intentions behind their business. If you’re not sure who to book with, let me assure you this is the one!

Doesn’t matter if you’re coming to learn about cacao, try artisan chocolates, or just simply soak in the immersive landscapes; Regardless of your intentions you will leave with a personalized story, a deeper understanding of the land and it’s cultural heritage, and maybe even a new friend. I can not more highly recommend this experience!

This tour was literally one of the best experiences we’ve ever made! Ahki and his adorable little daughter showed us their fascinating property and the beauty of the jungle. We’ve learned everything about the process from tree to bar and the history of chocolate. Ahki is an amazing storyteller with a great personality who answers all of your questions very passionately. During the tour you can let the smell and taste of the chocolate forest work its magic while experiencing real chocolate in various ways which will change your view on chocolate forever. We can highly recommend this inspiring tour and really hope to come back one day.
