What you'll do

Who’s hungry? Want to discover why Condenast Traveler, Bon Appetit and James Beard have lauded Chicago for its food?

It starts with some history! During this fun Zoom experience, we discover how Chicago’s working-class roots and its diverse people have shaped our local food culture. We’ll talk about local dishes across time and the gourmand scene of today.

With activities that show off personalities and get people working together, this experience is excellent for team-building. We’ve worked with Google, Gatorade, universities and more. You can also opt to send frozen Chicago pizza for your guests to eat hot during the experience.

You’ll hear the real stories behind Chicago’s famous dishes like our hot dogs, and also less famous ones like the gym-shoe sandwich. We’ve curated an incredible image collection. You’ll see vintage photos of historic sites, vivid food photos by top Instagrammers, and 360-degree Google Street View images that go into famous restaurants.

Itinerary:
First a quick food personality quiz!
Then I tell stories of Chicago's origins as a foodie town, from the stockyards to Gilded Age cafes.
Next, you'll hear how immigrants shaped our current food traditions, from Italian beef to Greek saganaki.
We’ll jump into the present with today's world-famous restaurant scene
Conclude with a fun challenge to show off your creativity and culinary sensibility.

I’ve been Creative Director of my tour company Chicago Detours since 2010. Previously I freelanced as a journalist, and I contributed to the Chicago Food Encyclopedia book. Travel writing and tour guiding internationally is also dear to my heart, and I worked in Italy with Rick Steves Europe. I have a Masters degree from the University of Chicago.
Chicago Detours is a small business. We have hosted over 27,000 curious people on virtual experiences that share stories of people, places and ideas across time. Food is a primary way that we connect with each other. I'm excited about sharing the stories of the people of Chicago through its food, and with connecting with our experience guests.
