What you'll do

Moving quietly through the snow covered woods and meadows of the Colorado Rockies, on snowshoes, is one of life's most peaceful yet thrilling experiences. You can still have the kind of magical , solitude winter experience that you always imagined, it does exist!

Even before Covid, we've always believed in outdoor experiences that are away from the crowds. There is nothing wrong with playing outside with a lot of other strangers, but that is already easy to do at ski resorts or crowded winter trailheads. But, this experience is all about being alone in the forest, with just your friends or family!

We'll meet up in Fairplay and drive separately, several miles up a mountain road to our staging area, where we will get you set up with all the gear you'll need. We have plenty of both snowshoes and xc skis in all sizes, and its all included at no charge. We also have a variety of snow toys like sleds, tubes, surfers, toboggans, etc and I usually bring some along with me for your use later on in the outing.

Typically, we cover between 1 to 2 miles, which in the forest is farther than you might think, and with an altitude gain/loss of between 200 and 1000 feet, depending on your preference and energy level. It takes 3 to 4 hours.

We'll get to a great viewpoint of the surrounding mountains and valley, and see the Continental Divide before returning to Fairplay.

I learned about the mountains while living and working as a guide in the Peruvian Andes, near Machu Picchu, for more than ten years. I moved to Colorado ten years ago because I so dearly missed winters, beautiful mountains, snow, blue skies and deep powder.
Once here, I soon left the ski resorts behind, and focused instead on the backcountry experience. There's nothing wrong with being in nature with a lot of other strangers, and indeed you often meet the most amazing and wonderful people.
Still, with the world being so hectic and winters in general are just more quiet and reflective, I really enjoy and focus on solitude winter adventures.
The biggest things I offer are: deep knowledge of the local mountain topography as well as its' rich history. We can even visit 100 yr old mining cabins, a great way to tie the past to our present.

Where you'll be

This experience takes place in the lower flanks of the mountains in the Mosquito Range, about 2 hours west of Denver, with several 14'ers and the Continental Divide. The "very quiet step sibling mountains" to the hustle and bustle just over the pass towards Breckinridge, Vail, etc. A secret, if you will - don't tell anybody!
We stay lower down, it is warmer with more stable snow conditions and weather. And, believe it or not, way less crowded.

Will is a great guide and our group had an awesome time with him. He was very friendly and patient with us (we arrived late). We followed him to the top of a mountain and from there we did some cross-country skiing among other activities. Will even took a ton of photos and videos for us while we trekked though the woods! Definitely recommend this experience.

Will was great! He was super helpful and attentive prior to the event and made sure we had all the gear necessary. He personalized the experience to fit what we were after. He also kept safety and fun as his top priority. As a bonus he is a great photographer and made sure we came away with some awesome pictures! He is easy to talk to and a great host. We had an amazing time and the view was far better than we could have hoped for. We highly recommend!
