What you'll do

Together we’ll rediscover the significant political contribution of Czechoslovak students in the struggle against authoritarian regimes and learn why 17th of November is recognised as International Students’ Day. We will learn about the origins of this day of remembrance in Nazi occupied Prague and see its significance in helping bring about the collapse of Communism in 1989.

We will follow the steps of the student protesters of 1989 and relive the day moment by moment, from the gathering at Albertov, through the historic Vyšehrad site, down to the brutal suppression of the student protests by Communist authorities on Národní třída.

If you join us, you will support the activities of our NGO and experience a unique aspect of political life in Czechoslovakia.
Other things to note
We are going to walk for about 1.5 hours with stops at local non-tourist places. Bring your camera and comfortable shoes & clothes.

We are members of Political Prisoners.eu (in Czech Politicti vezni.cz), NGO dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of political prisoners in socialist Czechoslovakia. We have interviewed countless survivors of communist persecution and preserve their experiences. Tomas is the founder, while his colleagues DAN, KRISTYNA, TEREZA and ALEX are scholars with study experiences in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. They have an avid passion for 'living' history and on-site lecturing; history that is meaningful and relevant, with a clear sense of place and individual character.

This tour is great if you want to get an insight in to the recent tumultuous political history of this country. It was a cold winters day and I was the only one on the tour so I had Alex’s expertise all to myself . We followed the route taken by the students on the protest march that was integral to triggering the fall of communism. Along the way we visited some politically and culturally significant sites and he was always able to answer my many questions!

This is an interesting tour. The experience of walking through the steps of Velvet Revolution while learning about its history gave me a understanding of Prague and it’s people I wouldn’t have received anywhere else.

The tour was great, and Tereza was an excellent guide! I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Velvet Revolution, as well as Czech history generally. The tour was well paced, and I liked the structure and flow of it. The experience was particularly impactful given the upcoming 30th anniversary.

This was one of the best tours I've ever been on. I HIGHLY recommend the tour. We spent several hours with Kristyna and traced the route of the students during the Velvet Revolution. It was clearly a topic Kristyna was passionate and extremely knowledgeable about. The tours support their NGO which seeks to record oral histories of political prisoners. There is one steep hill in the tour, but we were chatting the whole way and barely noticed. By the end of the tour, my boyfriend and I felt as though we had made a new friend. In addition to her breadth of knowledge about the Velvet Revolution, Kristyna was quick to point out other spots that might be of interest to us, joined us for a quick ice cream cone and then went above and beyond to guide us to the museum we wanted to visit after the tour. Her English was impeccable and we had fantastic conversations about everything, including differences in higher education between our countries. I cannot recommend this tour and tour company, in general, enough. The communication with the tour company was fantastic from start to finish.
