What you'll do

We'll meet on my private dock about 90 minutes before high tide and start with a safety briefing. You'll choose between our 14 foot faster kayaks and our 8 or 10 foot more stable craft based on self reporting of your watercraft/kayak experience. When everyone is comfortable we'll depart as I guide you down Simpkins Creek.
We may stay in the various adjoining small creeks or make our way to Ellis Creek which is the entry to Charleston Harbor. The marshes are beautiful most any time of year.
We'll likely see birds like white Ibis (Curlews), Egrets, Herons, Summer Ducks or Mergansers (diving ducks) in winter. We'll likely see fish jumping and miles of marsh-grass (brilliant green in summer) or we may see gorgeous sunsets or dolphins and hear the call of Marsh Hens.
A bit of the history of the island or the ecology of the marsh are available from the guide, should you request it or simply sit back and enjoy the serenity of the season and scene.
It's a bit of an upper body workout but you completely control the pace and duration of our gentle ride on the creek.

We have found that limiting the experience to 4 people makes for a more cohesive and enjoyable small group event. If, however, you would like to add one or two persons to your group, please inquire and let's discuss it.
Other things to note
Jackets, sunglasses, hats and an understanding that it's a work-out but a fun one, is always a good starting attitude!
And, before you ask, we've not seen an alligator...yet!
See you on the water!!

I've been traveling the world for the last 25 years and have been motoring, sailing and paddling everything from kayaks to 70-foot motor yachts for several decades. I was USCG licensed as a 100-ton master of motor and sailing vessels, and at one point was an associate of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors and Member-American Boat and Yacht Council.
While I've been in the James Island area since the 1990's I moved to this house about 5 years ago and almost immediately began kayaking and motor boating along the waters here, near my home. I fell in love with it and would like to share with you, on the water, why that happened.

Where you'll be

We'll start in our back yard and from there we'll be kayaking the tidal creeks of James Island and, potentially, kissing the edge of Charleston harbor. We'll start in our small, shallow, tidal creek and possibly move to larger, Ellis Creek where recreational and fishing boats ply.

We had a great time kayaking through the tidal creeks along the grass’ bank with Dan. We liked the easy-going style of the experience. It’s a must do in the low country!

Came to Charleston for a little solo vacation & I wanted to go kayaking but didn’t want to go alone. I’m so glad I found Dan & this experience. We started as the sun was rising cascading a beautiful orange hue over the area. I haven’t kayaked in over a year & Dan eased me back into it, even beginners would be in good hands with Dan. We set out to see the Charleston skyline across the river and saw DOLPHINS on the way out and luckily we saw them coming back in. For any birders, we also got to see a bunch of different species amongst the marshes. It was truly a great way to start my day! Would do it again

Dan was an amazing host with a wealth of knowledge and experience in kayaking as well as the ecology of the tidal waters and animals that inhabit the area. We truly enjoyed a one on one experience and felt as if life slowed down for a bit, which was a breath of fresh air. We'd highly recommend having Dan show you around! His dog, Mahoney was super cute & sweet, too.

Spectacular kayaking trip full of informational tidbits I could not have found anywhere else. It was truly a gift to kayak through the beautiful waters of Charleston with a very unique view I didn't see at any of the other places to kayak privately. I really enjoyed all of the information he shared with me and the small touches of detail. He provided a water bottle which was great! He also built a VERY sturdy setup to help you get into the kayak, so if you've never been in one before, don't worry a bit! The scenery was beautiful and the company was much appreciated! I couldn't recommend it any more!

Dan was a fantastic kayak tour guide! He was very knowledgeable about the area and was great at guiding us, but letting us go ahead on our own, too. There is also a fantastic view of Charleston and the Ravenel bridge! The sunset was beautiful as well!
