What you'll do

Join your host, Megan, in learning how to cross-country ski on trails that start right from the door of your cabin. You can be a total beginner or an experienced skier looking for improvement.

Megan was selected to spend four years on the National Nordic Team of PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) where she traveled nationally and internationally from 2012-2016 teaching ski instructors. She co-authored PSIA’s Nordic Technical Manual. You will be taught by one of the premiere instructors in America.

The cabin sits on a trail system with a perimeter distance of 15km and many interior loops. Each day’s route will be completely determined by the comfort and fitness of the participants as well as the weather and the grooming which is provided by the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club.

You can either arrive with your own equipment or rent equipment locally from Homer Saw and Cycle. That cost is not included in the ski lesson cost. You will need to have your equipment in hand before the lesson begins.

There is nothing as refreshing as an afternoon in the sunlight during an Alaskan winter and spring. Spending the day learning to ski in a non-threatening, comfortable environment with plenty of flat terrain to ski on is a fantastic way to spend the day and enjoy Homer!
Other things to note
You can be a complete beginner, no experience is needed for these lessons. You should let Megan know any health concerns or injuries that you are dealing with so that she can make you comfortable.

I have been a cross country skier, racer, coach and professional instructor for over 30 years. I founded and ran a large women’s ski group in Homer called Homer Women’s Nordic for eight years. I have coached high school and private junior racing teams. I was selected as the cross-country specialist on the PSIA National Nordic Team and spent four busy years traveling the world teaching instructors how to better instruct skiing. I have also worked extensively with disabled athletes on the cross country ski trails.

Where you'll be

We will be skiing on the Baycrest Ski Trails, a large trail system with varying terrain and different altitudes and snow conditions. If it by chance is not groomed, we will consider moving to another local ski trail that has been groomed.

Megan was a delightful and patient teacher. I am a total beginner at cross country skiing (though much more educated and confident than beforehand). She remained encouraging throughout my clumsy efforts to stay vertical. The trail was easy to access. The equipment rental at Saw & Cycle was quick and simple.
