What you'll do

Please wear something comfy for kayaking that you don't mind getting splashed. You also need to wear suitable footwear (old trainers or securely fitting sandals). NO SWIMWEAR, FLIP-FLOPS or CROCS!

When you arrive at The Pirate Castle, you'll meet your instructor guide and be given a buoyancy aid to put on. We'll then give a short safety talk and show you the basics on how to use your paddle and control your kayak.

You'll get into your boat (we'll help if you're wobbly!) and once everyone in the group's on the water we'll practise some basic paddle strokes before heading off on a gentle tour that weaves along the prettiest stretch of the Regent's Canal towards London Zoo, then back to Camden's famous lock and The Pirate Castle.

This experience is 1.5 hours long (including kitting up/briefings). All tours depart from/return to The Pirate Castle. The pace and distance travelled will vary for each tour, depending upon ability levels - absolute beginners and more experienced paddlers welcome! Our kayaks are suitable for weights up to 110Kg. Canoes available for paddlers up to 300Kg.

Kayaking is a watersport, so we'll go ahead even if it's raining. We only cancel tours in the event of thunder and lightning due to potential risks, in which case we'll discuss available options.

Due to our Covid-19 security protocols our changing room and shower facilities are unavailable.

The Pirate Castle is an amazing boating charity in Camden Town. After joining as a volunteer 14 years ago, I trained to become a qualified canal boat skipper and kayak coach to help run our canal-based projects in my spare time. I'm now part of the staff team and live locally on a canal boat!

Join one of our kayak tours for a leisurely adventure along the picturesque Regent's Canal and discover a different side of London. Your fully qualified, experienced and friendly instructor will share local insights and keep you safe, while you can feel good knowing that 100% of ticket sales helps fund our projects for local people.

About the organization: The Pirate Castle

The Pirate Castle promotes life chances, learning and healthy living through a raft of specialist canal and land-based projects. We've been flying the flag for opportunity and adventure on Camden's canals since 1966, providing free and affordable activities so that local children, disability groups and vulnerable members of our community can experience the benefits of being on the waterway.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to The Pirate Castle.

Where you'll be

The Pirate Castle is a distinctive gateway to the waterway that opens up a different side of Camden Town. Away from the bustling streets and markets, you might be lucky enough to see African Hunting Dogs or warthogs as we paddle past London Zoo.

Had such an amazing experience kayaking. Super easy to find in Camden. We both didn’t have experience and we felt right at ease. Only scary part was getting into the kayak! A lot of fun and a memory we will talk about for life. Feels even more special when it is a charity for such a great cause. Thank you!

Kayaking through the Regents canal is a unique and very special experience. Kal and his team have a great set up and I love the work that they do for the local community too. I was a bit wobbly getting in and out but Kal helped me out. Even though the conditions were a bit chilly and windy that didn’t matter as it was so much fun! I loved finding out about the history of the canal and seeing another part of London. It was especially fun to kayak past the African dogs enclosure at London Zoo too. I’d highly recommend this to anyone. I’m not an outdoorsy person but managed to do it without falling in. Thanks Kal and team for a memorable day!
