What you'll do

We will share an afternoon among old wood and metal type in a historical printing shop recreated in a heritage building.

The art of typography, or letterpress, was the system that dominated the printing of texts for five centuries, thanks to the brilliant simplicity of its operation: pieces of wood or metal, with the image of a letter or symbol engraved are used as stamps. By combining several of these reusable pieces, called movable type, we can generate words, sentences, paragraphs and pages of text, and by covering them with ink and applying pressure, transfer to paper, again and again, almost identical but deliciously individual copies.

In this experience we will use old wood letters to discover the tactile pleasure of the typesetting and printing process and celebrate the small errors and defects that add value to the final product and make each copy a unique object.

This experience is designed to play and enjoy an afternoon of discovery and exploration of an accessible and captivating technique, in the ideal setting provided by a cozy historical printing shop.

At Buena Letra we are two: Ariel Seoane —graphic designer, teacher and artist— and Marisa Elizalde —translator, teacher and Spanish copyeditor—, both with extensive experience in the fields of graphic arts, design and publishing.

With the idea of combining our great passions, we founded Buena Letra: a traditional letterpress print shop devoted to the conservation of old printing tools and materials, and recreating classic techniques linked to the history of our professions.

Thus, we design and produce art and graphic objects; we restore and collect old printing machines and equipment; we host workshops, educational visits and talks, and we share our love for typographic art, calligraphy, lettering and printing.
