What you'll do

Saddle up Pinot-neers! This adventure is a perfect blend of Wine History, Oregon History, and Oregon Wine History! Starting in Portland we follow the old wagon trail along the Willamette River to Oregon City, the First City of the West and End of the Oregon Trail, for a glimpse of mighty Willamette Falls, second largest in the USA! Follow old Highway 99 to a settler utopia, the Aurora Colony & Mission district, for our first tasting and some antique hunting! Next, cut through the rich Willamette Valley past the Champoeg Heritage Area and push on to Parrett Mountain Cellars for more vino in a luxurious log cabin in the temperate rainforest! Finally, we reach the summit at Beckham Estates, where viticulture and ceramics combine in the ancient oenological method of aging wine in huge handmade amphorae--a hot new "retro-trend"! Experience the process of Oregon wine pioneers with amazing views of the Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountains. Finally, we return to Portland, heads swimming and dripping with tales of history, nature, and culture that I will share--and customize to your interests--throughout the tour! Beautiful all four seasons, it doesn't get more "Oregon" than this!

Ask about flexible start times or larger groups. Tasting fees not included.

I'm Adam "Thorn" Smith, lifelong Oregon resident and expert world adventurer! After three decades as teacher, travel writer, and tour guide--in 50 countries on 5 continents--I'm sharing my best secret, my home, Oregon. But, you'll want local know-how, and no one can show you Oregon like I do.

Above all, I value experiences. I love HISTORY, NATURE, and CULTURE, and I'm loaded with local facts, figures, fables and fabulous trivia that most Oregonians don't know! I have extensive experience teaching regional and global history, I continually research, and am convinced that you'll agree, Oregon is an incredible unknown treasure! Adam was fantastic!! We learned so much about Oregon and surprisingly about California history, I have been in Portland several times but he drive us around areas I never thought exist full of stories, we went to 3 wineries, all of them so different and with excellent wines and service, the last wineries Beckham was just a delight and were I learned about amphora winemaking and we met the owner who also is a sculptor and he produce the amphoras to make the wine and now selling to another’s wineries. Too much to tell, sadly the day end but were so happy and have a new friend in Portland, thank you Adam!!! we will back again!
