What you'll do

In September, Leith named one of the coolest city neighbourhoods in the world. It took the 24th spot. Situated to the north of Edinburgh, just a 20-minute walk from the city centre, Leith offers grit. Its vibe is unrivalled. I’m a born-and-bred Leither, and rarely do I need to leave the EH6 postal area. During this experience, let me take you on a wee journey around my home. We’ll meet on The Shore. Situated at the mouth of the Water of Leith, it used to be the heart of industry. We’ll step back from the water’s edge and admire some of Leith’s architectural gems, such as Lamb’s House. We’ll then meander along the water toward Newhaven, a conservation area. It is an excellent example of Scottish fishing villages and it's not to be missed. There’s scope to enjoy the best fish and chips you'll ever have at Newhaven (all fish is from there), or some enjoy coffee at a local roaster's café.

I’m super passionate about where I come from and love nothing more than sharing it with visitors. I’m a competent photographer—shooting with Fujifilm— but love nothing more than shooting with my smartphone. I think that exploring new places through a lens gives you a renewed sense of the place. Your senses are heightened, and you become more aware of things that you might have otherwise missed.

Jemma was a phenomenal host and I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to get away from city center for part of the day! She was accommodating and flexible with the time to account for some potentially poor weather and as someone whose family has lived there for generations, she provides fantastic insight into the history and culture of the area, as well as great local recommendations for food and other points of interest. It’s a very scenic area and I’m very, very pleased that I was able to see it with guidance and insight provided by Jemma!

My advice - RUN to take this FANTASTIC, FASCINATING, and FUN TOUR with Jemma! She is super knowledgable, extremely helpful with all things Scottish, especially Leith & Edinburgh, and delightful to talk to about life. It was a rare and highly informative glimpse of historic and new Leith from a Leith local who has a deep history there dating back hundreds of years to her great great grandmother who was a fish wife in neighboring New Haven. We walked from The Shore to the open sea! It's INCREDIBLE, and, yet, you don't have to be an expert walker to handle this tour. It's would be great for all ages and all activity levels. Be sure to get tips on where to get the best fish & chips, steak dinners, and vegan treats! I cannot recommend this tour highly enough!

This walk with Jemma was a wonderful experience. She knows Leith inside and out and comes from a Leith family with shipbuilders and fisher women. She was very personable and friendly (and says she loves to chat and connect with people.) I definitely could not have known Leith so well on my own. I especially loved seeing the old buildings and the village of fishermen cottages. She also explained changes occurring now in the area. Thanks Jemma!

She even recommended a delicious fish and chips restaurant that I visited after the tour. She was friendly, helpful, passionate and well-informed. I had a lovely time exploring the city with Jemma!

I was so lucky that it was only myself on a weekday. And total duration is around 1 hour. Jemma knows so well about the neighbourhood as she is a local and she did lots of research. For instance the origin of name of a street. And it was so amazing to compare the drawings hundreds years ago with nowadays. I love the quite Leith and old town and harbour of Newhaven. Jemma also recommended a very good place to have fish'n'chips. I enjoyed dinner there and then very easy to get back to city center by bus. I wouldn't have known much about the history and lifestyle back hundreds years ago without her. She is very enthusiastic about her home town and always happy to take questions.
