What you'll do

Come explore Mormon Trailhead, Fatman’s Pass, and Hidden Valley in the South Mountain Preserve. We'll hike about 2 1/2 - 3 hours, a length of 3.8 miles total, and a gain of 918 feet of elevation to discover Hidden Valley, Arizona.

The adventure begins with a climb that offers beautiful views for me to capture hikers with a Sony A7 camera. As we continue to gain elevation we’ll see local landmarks like Downtown Phoenix, Four Peaks, Camelback Mountain, and Piestewa Peak in the distant view.

As we ascend we’ll be surrounded by boulder like terrain formations. We’ll stop to capture the Sonoran Desert’s unique wildlife with photos of hikers. The trail features wild flowers, cacti, eroded formations, ancient Hohokom petroglyphs, and plenty of other desert plants. Making it the most photogenic part of the hike. We might even spot chuckwallas, quails, lizards, and jack rabbits.

Next, we’ll reach the highest elevation and squeeze through Fat Man’s Pass (a narrow passage through two smooth boulders), just one foot wide. Here we will be completely surrounded by Mother Nature and away from the city views. We’ll take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Afterwards we’ll hike to a natural rock tunnel.

We will have more views of the valley on the way back down the mountain to our vehicles and pictures of hikers will be available for them to download or have emailed.
