What you'll do

Many foreign tourists to Nara usually visit only the major sites in Nara city, but Nara, as the birth place of Japan, has a lot more to offer. If you are rather disappointed by too modernized Japan, and looking for something deep, then, Yamato is waiting for you to be discovered!

After meeting at JR Nara station, I will take you to my favorite Shinto shrine and a Buddhist temple by trains and walking. Both of them are surrounded by beautiful nature, and its origins are full of history and legends. As a spiritual power spots, they have been worshipped by the people from all over Japan over 1300 years.

•Explore the oldest and the first ranking shrine in Yamato, “Ohmiwa Shrine” with history since the time of mythology.

•Drink the holy spring water of Sai shrine from sacred Mt. Miwa, believed to heal any diseases.

• Visit Hase Temple deep in the mountain with seasonal beauty with flowers to worship one of the biggest wooden statue of Kannon, goddess of mercy.

Along the way, I will explain the Japanese history, difference between Shintoism and Buddhism, and spiritual wisdom and traditions and more. Of course, according to your request. Any questions are welcomed, too.
Other things to note
Please join the tour with comfortable shoes & clothing.
With respect, please be reminded not to talk loudly or take photos in a sacred ground.
The tour may take longer due to the train schedule.

I grew up in Yamato region in Nara, the birth place of Japan as a nation and home of Japanese spirituality. I’m living in Nara city as a government-licensed tour guide since 2009.
So far, I've guided many (first visitors and repeaters) who had deep, strong interest in Japan. I’m very much aware of the true value of the spiritual heritage of Japan, which is rarely explained to the tourists in English. And the perfect place to share that is Yamato, Nara, my local area!
I love history and enjoy meeting with new people and taking them to my favorite sites in the off-the-beaten path.

Akiko is very thoughtful and well prepared. Her binder is full of all kinds of information relates to the places she took us, which helped us with understanding more of Japanese history and tradition. Her tour took us to the places that are beautiful and spiritual, and we probably won't know or be able to go without her. Akiko is very friendly and sweet. She even spent extra time to take us to the place( Nara park) we wanted to go after the tour ended. definitely will recommend her tour to our family and friends. It was a wonderful experience of traveling with Akiko.

This is a unique experience to gain a deeper understanding of Japanese traditions and religion. Akiko is very passionate and knowledgeable about Japan, and an excellent guide. She brought us to the countryside to visit two remote temples that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. And both places were truly unforgettable and beautiful! We engaged in a lively conversation and she answered all of our questions and doubts with clear and insightful answers. A day that I will remember in years to come!

Akiko did so much more than expected (And I was already expecting a lot!) : she explained me more about the spiritual roots and history ofJapan, she made me discover places I wouldn’t have known otherwise (I felt like I was in a Miyazaki movie!) and took ahead of her time to be sure I wouldn’t be lost after the experience. Our small group was really nice and this is definitly an unforgetable day.

Being the only guest on the tour during my visit, I was able to immerse into the experience deeply and have a remarkably unique experience. Akiko connected the history of Japan with today's culture, giving me a deep perspective into what can be done to improve the well-being here and around the world. Aligned with my personal work, Akiko cleverly customized the experience for what I was seeking.

Akiko’s tour was one of my favorite things I did in Japan. I learned so so much about Japanese culture, religion, and history in beautiful places I would have never found on my own. Akiko was incredibly knowledgeable—she taught me so much and had answers to all my questions. If you want a deeper understanding of Japan and Japanese culture I highly recommend this tour. Also, Akiko was completely lovely and made the day super special, making me feel very welcome. Thank you Akiko for an amazing day!!

I suspect when the idea of Airbnb "Experiences" first came about it was experiences such as this that they had in mind. Akiko will take you two two extraordinary places, one a Shinto shrine where a scared mountain is worshiped and another a stunning buddhist temple set within a lush temple complex. She grew up in the area you will be visiting so she is very helpful in explaining everything that is going on around you; things you might otherwise miss. Overall, if your looking to get off the main drag in Nara, I cannot imagine a better way to do it than by spending the day with Akiko.
