Mysterious Temples of Hakata

Fukuoka, Japan

Experience hosted by Masato + Anne

  1. 3.5 hours
  2. Hosted in English, German, and Japanese

What you'll do

After meeting at the meeting point, we will take you to see some hidden treasures. Places, tourists usually won't see. You'll have time to take pictures of many outstandingly beautiful temples and a historical shrine. The temple walk will last about four hours, so please be prepeared and wear sneekers or shoes you feel comfortable in. At the sites you'll feel as if you were in a different time - promise! Enjoy the serenity of the gardens. It's amazing to find such places in the middle of a modern city - you will see. On the way, we will taste Kamaboko (fishham) when passing a small factory that has produced this delicacy for over a hundert years and Umegae Mocchi (a typical Hakata sweet). After the walk we will take you back to the meeting point if you wish.
Other things to note
We do the tour with small groups only - 1 - 6 guests. We like to keep it intimate so we can answer individual questions. The walk is enjoyable even on a rainy day but you'll need rainprotection. Due to the special Covid-19 situation, we ask our guests to wear facemasks - as will we.

Masato was born in Fukuoka and Anne in Europe.
We lived, worked and traveled in Europe and Asia and we both really love temples and shrines. The beauty of those wooden buildings, their gardens and their history has captured us.
Come with us for a walk to the temples, get some insight into their history, take pictures of those precious places.
On the way we will taste green tea, Umegae Mocchi (a typical Hakata sweet) and handmade Kamaboko (fishham) produced by a small factory that has existed for over a hundred years.

Where you'll be

We will be around Hakata area - off the beaten tourist tracks and visit several Temple sites, which we find absolutely beautiful. We love the calmnes of the gardens and the many oportunities to take most wonderful pictures. But most of all, we love the feeling of Japan's history.

I had high expectations for this tour and Masato and Anne surpassed them all! They were friendly, knowledgable, and passionate about sharing the stories and culture of the area. We had a wonderful time touring the temples of Fukuoka with them and appreciated the additional recommendations for further exploring on our own. Would recommend this tour to anyone!

Masato and Anne were amazing hosts. This trip was just my girlfriend and I so they were able to really dive deep into a lot of things. The stories they told and all the information they gave us was truly amazing. As Masato said we now have “huge brain”. I would 100% book this experience again and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the history of the shrines and Buddhist temples.

We had great time exploring off the beaten track temples of Hakata with Anne and Masato who are really passionate and knowledgable. It was a more than 3 hours tour with excellent guides! We even stopped at delicious local shop and tasted some local and traditional delicacies. Great introduction to the beautiful city of Fukuoka with the temples of Hakata and history of the city. Highly recommended.
