What you'll do

The tour begins with pick up at and short visit to the Durban Botanical Gardens where we discuss the history of the Indians presence in South Africa, followed by a visit to a heritage centre, which serves as a museum of indenture. Watch a short video and learn about the importance of spices in Indian cooking and in Ayurvedic medicine, after which we drive through the Casbah area to a local spice market where we get to taste the spices and watch them demonstrate mixing techniques. We step back in history to visit a general dealer store which still operates as they did a hundred years ago. Following our story we drive through historic Cato Manor and visit a temple established in 1909. We then drive to the largest Indian township in the southern hemisphere, marvelling at the multi coloured houses and the bustle of an apartheid era township. Our lunch stop is at a temple restaurant and here we sit in utter serenity as we enjoy delicious food prepared by loving hands. You will learn all about township life and then experience it all first hand as you visit the craziness of a local market where everything can be found...from shoelaces to snake gourds!!! Enjoy some delicious Indian snacks here before a visit to a temple built in the South Indian style. Expect a few surprise stops to make your experience that more exciting! Do join me in an unforgettable day out!!
Other things to note
This will be a tour of around 7 hours duration so please wear comfortable shoes. Please dress appropriately for temple visits eg no super short shorts. Leave expensive jewellery at home.

Namaste! I am a retired teacher, a journalist for 18 years and an antiques business owner (10 years) who has resided in Durban all my life. I have taught school for 28 years so expect to be getting a history lesson interspersed with some great stories. I would love to show you these gems of my culture and heritage and also take you into an Indian township to see how we lived during apartheid. I would love for you to experience my culture through its food. I am very well traveled and will give you what I would want on a tour : a first class experience, with great food and great company

It has been one of my best AirBnb experiences. Since the time we met Usha, my friend and I felt really comfortable with her. We felt such a good energy from her since the begining until the end of the experience. We recommend this experience 100%. And if you are interested in antiques, she knows an excellent place. 😍😍😍

Usha showed us areas of Durban we would not be able to visit by ourselves and gave us a good insight in the complex history of indian communities in South Africa with personal examples and many references. It was definitely a very interesting tour!

I had a great day with Usha. She has told me a lot about the history of Indian culture in Durban. Usha could show me and let me experience things that I could not have done otherwise. It was also great to get in touch with other people through Usha. Because of her I got to know Durban very differently again, I saw how people with different backgrounds and beliefs can live side by side. Usha thanks again for the nice day!
