What you'll do

Explore the architectural gems in Budapest w/ an architect

We'll take a walk in the center of Budapest and talk about the city's architecture, urban context, and of course a bit of history as well. You'll get a more detailed understanding of just how fantastic this city is. Budapest is made of successes and failures, a mixture of different styles overlaid over one another, always in a constant state of change, and that is what makes it so uniquely interesting!

I'm János, a local architect from Budapest. I am the curator and program manager of several different projects at the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre (KÉK), such as Budapest100 and Walking Tours. I regularly do guided tours for locals and tourists alike. I have always been passionate about Budapest, and find it very important to have a better understanding of our built environment. That is why I love walking and talking about my city! Since I am a local, "born and raised", I can provide a combination of personal and professional insights to the architecture of Budapest.

Where you'll be

A hole in the ground turned into a concert space! A "could-have-been" skyscraper in Chicago-style! We'll check out different public spaces, and how they serve the local community as well as the touristic image of the city. We'll also see Szervita Square, where the eclectic architectural mix of Budapest has all the essentials, from baroque to modernist. Walking by the Danube we'll take a look at the world heritage Buda side as well.

It was a truly journey in just 2 hours to understand different layers of the city, how it was built and the new evolution. It is more than a tour, Janos has is own point of view that is willing to share and debate, creating a very easy going atmosphere of questions and asnwers.

As I was the only person that booked the tour on that day I had a private guide then which was great :) It was very interesting to see the city from an architectural point of view with all the information he gave. He is really enthusiastic and very motivated, I just can recommend to have a walk with him!

János was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about his city. It was a pleasure to wander the city with him and get a better appreciation of how diverse the architectural styles are within the same block on many of the city streets. I went into the tour believing the city is beautiful, but left with an understanding of the history of the city that made the buildings even more interesting and beautiful.

János is a thoughtful young architect who really brought context to the tour. Even though the walk is relatively short, he chose a route that had a variety of interesting examples of the “successes and failures” of Hungarian architecture. We’ll recommend this tour to our friends who visit! P.S.—my husband (touring with me) is an architect himself and loved János’s knowledge of architectural theory.
