What you'll do

This is a hands-on experience where guests will have the opportunity to learn the basics of winemaking from an experienced hobby winemaker beginning with the grapes in the vineyard and ending on the unique FLX Wine Barge.

Guests will be greeted by Kathy at Fulkerson Winery where she will lead them to an appropriate vineyard tract, explain about the variety of grapes to be harvested, provide gloves, grape harvesting forks and buckets and set each guest up to pick about 10 pounds of wine grapes each. Once harvesting is complete, the group will return to the winery and, while Kathy settles up for the grapes, guests will be free to do a wine tasting of Fulkerson’s wines with special attention to any wines that were made with the variety of grape just harvested.

Next, in their own vehicles, participants will follow Kathy to her place on nearby Lamoka Lake, where they will board the docked FLX Wine Barge to enjoy a boxed lunch. During this time, Kathy will provide an Introduction to Winemaking: From Grape to Glass. Participants will learn how to measure sugar content in grapes using a refractometer and understand how the sugar is converted to alcohol by yeast to make wine.

Next, guests will manually destem their grapes and then crush them in the traditional way. Once the grapes have been converted to “must,” we will share a celebratory toast in a Wine Barge souvenir glass.
Other things to note
This will be a hands-on activity, mostly outdoors. While not strenuous, there will be some walking and bending. Participants will be standing while they destem grapes but will be seated on the Wine Barge.

As a lifelong wine enthusiast, hobby winemaker, winemaking instructor/consultant, Finger Lakes winery tasting room associate and retired educator, teaching people about wine is what I love to do. I founded Vagabond Vintner to develop communities of wine lovers and wine makers. My approach to wine is educational without pretension and puts its enjoyment within reach for everyone. In addition to 10 years of practical experience making wine, I've also completed the Winemaking Certificate at Vermont Technical College. For me, a big part of wine appreciation is context so the unconventional settings for my workshops add to the excitement of learning about wine! From joining me to pick or stomp grapes, analyzing juice in a home wine lab or tasting wines aboard my wine barge, learning about wine with Vagabond Vintner is a unique experience.

My husband and I really enjoyed learning about the process of winemaking and the hands-on experiences, too! And we made some new friends as a bonus. Kathy is engaging and very knowledgeable about her subject. We planned this for the first day of our vacation - great decision! Kathy gave us the local tips and tricks! Considering this experience? Just do it - you won't be sorry!

An experience indeed! Kathy is very knowledgable about her grapes and wines. I never knew the history of grapes especially in the FLX area. I was impressed with how organized she was. From the grape harvesting, wine tasting at Fulkerson's, then to her home on a docked barrell barge for lunch, more wine tasting, more history, getting to know new friends, then the de-stemming of the grapes, more wine tasting---then a good Ol' grape stomping to music! She has a wine shed where she explains the wine making process and we learned about sugar and alcohol levels using instruments at the different levels of distilling. Pretty cool to learn about the difference between champagne and prosecco. Oh My Gosh---THE SABERING was amazing to watch and learn. Next stop for me is to come back for sabering lessons. All you bring is you and your friends, rain boots, and layers---Kathy has everything else! In my top 10 experiences of my life!

Honestly, this was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. A group of us girls booked for one of our birthdays after canceling a trip to Napa due to Covid, and it far exceeded our expectations. Kathy is so humble and for sure an expert at her trade. Her wine barge is a blast, directly on the water, and she welcomes you like you are family. We plan on taking one of her virtual classes over the holidays on how to make mulled wine! Endless wine and laughs!

This experience was absolutely amazing. Kathy was so thoughtful and knowledgeable in everything she did. From picking the grapes to stomping them, we had the time of our lives. Kathy was such great company and made everyone feel so welcome and comfortable. We literally didn’t want to day to end. We already said we want to make it an annual event!
