What you'll do
My peaceful (100 min.) walking tour takes you on a film & fiction adventure in Manhattan's historic Carnegie Hill neighborhood. The 3pm tour meets at the Guggenheim Museum (89th & 5th) and ends at the Metropolitan Museum.
In response to COVID-19, I will only book one tour at a time, your tour. I wear a face shield on the tour so you can see my face.
See filming locations ("The Fisher King," "Marathon Man," "American Psycho"), homes of literary icons (J.D. Salinger, Truman Capote, Erik Larsen), lush Central Park, and the impressive architecture of one of the country's oldest, wealthiest, and most popular filming locations in the world.
We'll see the beautiful stained glass murals in The Church of Heavenly Rest where Keanu Reeves meets Charlize Theron in "The Devil's Advocate" and glimpse a variety of waterbirds inhabiting the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park!
We'll see the impressive Andrew Carnegie Mansion (a.k.a. The Cooper Hewitt Museum of Design) and dig the French Gothic Chateau style of The Jewish Museum while checking out filming locations from movies such as "Arthur," "Maid In Manhattan," "Men In Black," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Cactus Flower," "Mr. Popper's Penguins," "Ransom," "Melinda and Melinda," "When Harry Met Sally," "Working Girl," and "The International."
If it looks rainy, bring an umbrella. Wear comfortable shoes.

I'm 24-year veteran film critic and historian Cole Smithey. My popular website ColeSmithey.com, and Craft Beer & Film Podcast LA GRANDE BOUFFE (THE BIG FEAST), provides movie-lovers with a wealth of audio, video, and print entertainment online.
I've lived in Carnegie Hill along Museum Mile since 1997. Tons of movies have used locations here, amid the neighborhood's 19 different styles of architecture. "American Animals" and HBO's "The Hunt" are two recent projects that feature Carnegie Hill locations. Andy Warhol, J.D. Salinger, Mike Nichols, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Truman Capote, Sidney Lumet, and Anthony Bourdain have all lived in this wonderful neighborhood that I have the joyous pleasure of sharing with you.
Let me take you on a wonderful film and fiction adventure through Carnegie Hill! We might even see a celebrity!

Cole is a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic host. I was the only guest on a super freezing day, and Cole’s professionalism and thoughtfulness just warmed my heart. He loves his neighborhood as much as he loves films and literature - he knows every building and anecdotes behind it. I recommend the tour and checking his website to get some background knowledge. If you have free time and enough energy, get ready to tour the Guggenheim and MET before and after the tour on you own.
