What you'll do

Learn Olympic/traditional archery in the rain or sun!

This is inactive. I now teach at a new experience in San Jose, CA @ All Star Bullseye: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/512503

A session will be at least 2 hours (for best experience) and will be divided into three phases. The first phase will cover safety and basic techniques. You will learn about the rules, safety precautions, and the steps to shooting correctly. The second phase will be a guided shooting session. Once you've learned all the techniques sufficiently, you will be able to shoot at your own pace. The third phase will be to apply what you've learned in games. I will also be providing continual feedback and guidance to improve your shot and technique. I have a very flexible style of teaching and will answer any questions you may have. I have my own right handed (RH) 35 pound (#) Olympic recurve bow, a beginner (RH) 20# recurve bow, a beginner (RH) 25# recurve, and a (RH) 45# compound bow. If you are left handed, I can borrow a 20#. Usually for beginners, I would recommend starting at around 20 pounds. Even if you can easily pull the bow, technique will be your main focus. If I think you are comfortable, you may try the 35# and 45# bows. As with all sports and activities, safety first :)

If you have more than 2 people in your group, please message me and I will accommodate.

My name John and I am a certified USA Archery Level 1 Instructor. I have loved archery all my life and started in 2011. I have been trained by Coach Ray in California who was a 2x gold Olympian. Like him, I really enjoy helping/guiding people to become passionate about archery. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling and have been to 27 countries! Meeting new people and learning about different cultures/perspectives is awesome.

Where you'll be

In the Portland area, there are many archery ranges. The range I prefer is at Washington Park. We will begin by shooting towards the right side of the archery range where the targets are closer. This will ensure maximum success and confidence. During phase 3, we may increase the range.

Got invited to go shooting with John by a friend. I'd never had any real experience with archery but John was a great teacher. He explained everything very clearly and was patient in correcting any issues/bad form I had. I learned a lot about archery during the session as he is not only knowledgeable regarding the technical skills associated with archery but also in the history of the sport. I'd highly recommend anyone visiting Portland to book this and give archery a try!

Perfect day. Relaxing, engaging, entertaining. We learned a ton and by the halfway point, I was confidently shooting arrows with the tips and direction from a great teacher. Highly recommended for any/all ages and skill levels.

My fiancé and I had an amazing experience with John. Before the lesson with John, I had zero experience with archery, and my fiancé had very limited experience. John divided the session up into three mini lessons during the course of two hours. During that time, we worked on learning form, how to draw, and how to aim. At the beginning, I didn’t know how to hold a bow, but by the end of the lesson I was successfully shooting at (and popping!) balloons that I’d learned how to aim at. John was very patient with us and continued to monitor and correct our form along the way. He was also very friendly and kind and took some time to get to know us. Towards the end of the session (once we knew what we were doing a bit better), John took a bunch of photos of us in action and a couple videos to remember the experience. We actually looked like we knew what we were doing! All in all, it was a wonderful time and I would recommend it to anyone at any skill level.
