What you'll do

We start the tour in the New town of Edinburgh and explore it's connections with the 18th and 19th century global slave trade. Who benefited from the slabe trade here? Who fought against it?

We then head straight into the Old Town and even find out what medieval Scottish kings thought about slavery. Who were the first Africans in Scotland? Why were they here? We answer these questions and many more

After this, we walk to Calton Hill and explore Edinburgh's more recent connections to the slave trade. Which Scots helped end Slavery? Who had an interest in retaining it?

We finish with a discussion on the legacy of Scotland's relationship with the slave trade.
Other things to note
This tour can run in poor weather so make sure you are appropriately dressed. We will be discussing a very contentious topic so please also come with an open mind and a realisation that distressing details will be brought up which some guests may find upsetting.

It is a wonderful thing to hear someone so knowledgeable speak so passionately about their field of expertise. Empire and slavery is a side of history we know too little about in the UK, and it was utterly fascinating (as well as extremely sobering) to learn about it on location in Edinburgh. The topic was handled sensitively, and there was no sugarcoating. All aspects were indiscriminately explored. Our guide, Gains, was friendly and tailored the tour to our group, keenly answered questions and provided good context. If you can stare down the barrel of the horrors of our past, this is for you.

Gains totally adapted the level of the tour to the group. I've lived 5 years in Edinburgh and thought I knew about the city, but Gains was still able to show us places I hadn't seen, or hadn't seen in that light before. The man has a PhD in this exact topic and was an absolute mine of interesting stories and in depth knowledge, and offered a balanced and realistic account without drenching it in personal opinion. I'll definitely be back for another tour, or maybe even do the same one again!
