I love sneakers.
Like many of you, I grew up watching basketball and I think that’s a big reason why I’ve been a fan of collecting sneakers ever since I was young.
I am currently in the NBA “bubble” with my team in Orlando, preparing for the restart of the professional season, and I want to use the time in isolation to talk all-things-sneakers. I always want to talk about how my identity and culture greatly influenced my love for stylish kicks on and off the court.
You’ll learn more about me: where I come from, what got me into basketball, and how my dual Japanese-Beninese background uniquely influenced my desire to play professionally. I’ll also share my excitement for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 next year!
As an added bonus, I will be bringing a very special guest, Jasmine Jordan, who will join me to chat about some of my favorite sneakers and my love for design.

As a native of Toyama, Japan, I’ve taken a unique path to becoming an NBA player. I grew up playing baseball and did not start playing basketball until I was 13. Then, I focused on my dream of playing pro in the US. I ended up playing for Gonzaga University, and when I arrived on campus I could barely speak English, but I worked tirelessly and found success as both a student and an athlete.
My determination paid off and I became the first Japanese athlete to play in the NCAA tournament and the first Japanese athlete to be selected in the NBA draft. Now, I’m a lead player for the Washington Wizards and training to represent with the best of Japan for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

I had a really good time with Rui and Jasmine, they were really nice and fun to talk to. Especially with the corona, I’ve been feeling kind of depressed but this experience definitely brightened my day! So thank you for the opportunity, I’ve had a really fun time. Fingers crossed for the Olympics!!! :)
