What you'll do

Live from the Olympic Games in Tokyo, join Tegla Loroupe, an Olympian, world record holder, and the Chef de Mission of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, and learn from her about the inspirational Refugee athletes and their journey to the Olympic stage.

Four years ago, the world was introduced to the first-ever IOC Refugee Olympic Team on the grand stage of the RIO 2016 Games. Those athletes represented exceptional athleticism and inspired millions of people, as they competed alongside 11,000 athletes from around the world. This year, the Refugee Team was announced again, and 29 athletes qualified to join their peers in Tokyo.

Join Tegla as she introduces us to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020, brings to life how important it is that this team exists, and highlights the story they have to share about the refugee community. Guests will learn about the journey these athletes took to get to Tokyo, and how the struggles they faced in life create a universal story of resilience and courage—one that began from the conflicts they fled, and culminates with them on the world stage, together. All in all, we’ll see how their fearless pursuits have made them the ultimate symbols of hard work and determination.

Hi, I’m Tegla. I was the first African woman to win the NYC Marathon and I have held many world records for running. In 2003, I started the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation. We’ve created a Peace Race to bring warring tribes together, helped build schools for orphans, and created a training center for athletes. Four athletes from this training center will compete in the 2020 Olympic Games on the Refugee Olympic Team this year, and I am the team’s Chef de Mission.

Hi, I’m Mathew Lam and I am a refugee athlete from South Sudan. I currently live in Kenya where I help run the Tegla Loroupe Sports & Training Centre; here I get to work with amazing refugee athletes to help unlock their full potential.

Tepla's and the other refugee athletes are truly extraordinary individuals. It felt very special to be in direct contact with her while she was in Tokyo.

It's great to be part of the tegla Chepkite and James sharing. It's amazing to train so many champions in such a normal environment. Thank you to Tegla Chepkite for her contribution to the sport and t the peace-building of the people through the movement.

This experience was very eye opening and inspiring! Tegla's story and athletic career is increbile and it was such a honour to get to meet her in this experience. The tour of the training facility felt like a once in a lifetime experience to see where some of the world's best athletes, who have endured unfathomable hardship, train and live. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone!

It was eye-opening getting to tour the training facility & knowing more about their training process! The internet connection during the call was rather spotty and I wasn’t forewarned (until the meeting itself) that it would be streamed live on YouTube. Would appreciate a heads-up as I didn’t want to participate on live stream

Such a pleasure and honor to meet Tegla online and get a tour of her camp - the school, the gym, James' farm projects, the Historical Hall, exercises with their coach, and the site of their future running track. She is doing so much to help athletes & young people in her community - an inspirational role model to all. I loved to hear about her personal anecdotes as a peace mediator - and she continues to lead by example. And, if you decide to visit, "bring your trainers!!" I am grateful for this experience - much love & many thanks.
