What you'll do

From North Berwick we will learn how to sea kayak and head out on a journey around the islands of Craigleith and Lamb. We can stop on some of Scotland's most beautiful beaches, pass under historic Tantallon Castle, or paddle into the smallest harbour in Scotland. This area is full of wildlife, with huge seabird colonies including puffins, gannets, razorbills, guillemots, and many more. Seals and, on occasion, porpoises, dolphins, or even whales might keep us company. Arriving at the beach, we will get into our dry cags and buoyancy aids, and set up the kayaks to suit each person. On the beach we will learn how to paddle the kayak, and then we will get on the water in the bay to try it out. Once everyone is feeling confident that they can make the boat go forwards and turn, we will head out on our journey to the Island of Craigleith. Once there, we will have the option to get out of the boats and stretch our legs, or possibly continue on to the Isle of Lamb before heading back to the beach at North Berwick.

My enjoyment of the wilderness came at age 13, and since then I love to get into the outdoors in the pursuit of rock, snow, or water. I am passionate about our wilderness which, along with my young family, encouraged me to set up this sea kayaking venture. I enjoy sea kayaking, as it allows me to see things from a different perspective and get up close to beaches, islands, and wildlife that are inaccessible by other means. While I searched for high-end adventure in my younger days, now you are more likely to see me out on mini outdoor adventures with my wife, daughter, and sons.

Where you'll be

From West Beach in North Berwick we can paddle around the Island of Lamb which is flanked by two "sheep dogs"—North and South Dog islands—which are basically small reefs. If time allows, we can also head out to the Island of Craigleith which, like the nearby Bass Rock, has a substantial seabird population. The area is home to the largest grey seal colony on the east coast of Britain.
