What you'll do

Our farm stand is just off the road at our home, and next to our gardens. Lumi, our Greeter dog, will welcome you. She's friendly with other dogs and children.

The Bee Experience starts by learning about bee basics, and handling a model hive component with illustrative photographs all about the bees.

Everyone will get to make a salve to take home, made by melting our beeswax into food grade oil. Salves have lots of uses - medicinal, moisturizing and even just for scent. A selection of Essential Oils are available to scent the salve.

While the salve is cooling, we'll go outside and taste three different kinds of honey - clear early summer honey, mid-summer wildflower and buckwheat honey to appreciate the seasonal and floral variations.

The farmstand also features a hand-made, oversized wooden bee frame puzzle, and colouring pages are available for kids. Dress up like your favourite bee, and stand in front of the bee wings on our farm stand for a photo memory! Suitable for all ages!

While you're here, you can also see a solar beeswax melter works, explore the pollinator friendly plants around the farm stand and view the holz hauzen and off grid property.

Meet your host, Elis

I've been a beekeeper for five years in Prince Edward County, living on an off-grid homestead with my partner, adding honey and salves to our garden produce which helps sustain us all year long.

I'm passionate about growing and making things which are good for us and the planet. I'm also passionate about educating - about bees, how they provide food for us, our connection with the natural world and how we can protect it.

Elis is great and shared her wealth of knowledge about bees and beekeeping with us. Everything from how they keep the bees, what purpose each bee serves the hive, how they create their combs and store nectar and pollen to create honey. We were able to taste 3 different varieties of honey which were all uniquely different and got some insight into how the different types are made. We even got to melt down some beeswax and make our own scented beeswax to take home with us! There are also a bunch of products for sale there which come either from the farm itself or other local farms as well.

An interesting and fun experience!! I learned a lot about Bees and was amazed at their incredible ingenuity. I walked away reflecting on what I learned and thought there is much to learn about life and “beeing” who you are from them :-) Elis provided clear, relevant information in a unique and beautiful location. It was fun to make a product we can use to take home, so many amazing scents to choose from! Elis provided us with information about the county and other resources closer to our home related to our questions! I recommend this experience for people of all ages!!

More tips

Although there are no bees directly involved in the Experience, we are out in nature, so there are bugs. Wearing low scent is always a good idea, and bring your sense of adventure! We're happy to have kids and folks in wheelchairs. Just let us know so we can serve you better!
