What you'll do

In ceramics, we first examine clay bodies and determine which clay you would like to explore. Each clay has different characteristics. Porcelain is more translucent than stoneware. Terra cotta is perfect for making a flower pot.

Part of our consideration will be the glazing effect you desire to achieve. Glazes interact differently with different clay bodies.

I provide various vessels that have already been thrown and bisque fired. These you can hand paint. Or you can throw your own vessel.

The throwing experience begins with wedging the clay. Then we have body mechanics on how to throw. The use of anchoring your fingers to your hands to your arms, shoulders and core.

I teach you how to center the clay and then explore a few shape options. Pulling a wall. Compressing and shaping the rim. Forming a spout or playing with shapes in the profile of your piece.

Then, I slowly dry your piece and will trim it for you and fire, glaze and mail it to you.

In welding, we discuss the physics of electricity and go through an extensive safety protocol. Many of my students choose to weld a chain saw blade heart sculpture, something I call "Love Cuts Deep".

My teaching style allows you to understand the dangers and the rewards of playing with lightning. I have all the special clothing you need to stay safe. Your sculpture is ready to take with your at the end.
Other things to note
Creating art is a fun and rewarding experience. Letting go of perfection and allowing our hands to guide our minds reminds us of simpler times. Art can get messy. So, a relaxed heart and casual clothes sets the stage for a fun few hours!

Hello friends! I'm Casey McDonald. I have run the Spiral Stair Inn since 2012 and I've had Hot Art Studios since 2017.

At my art studio, I have a two hour private class designed especially for couples. I teach you how to throw a vessel on a wheel and how to weld a sculpture.

I am self taught and have visited ceramic artists in Japan and South Korea and much base my style on influences from there.

As a teacher, I provide you a safe, judgement free studio environment. We talk about the physics of the material and the equipment you are working with and give you very specific micro adjustments you can do to have powerful subtle influence on clay or metal.

What you create is taken with you or shipped to your door.

Explore your inner artist at the Hot Art Studios! -Casey

Where you'll be

This personal, private class takes place in my studio, Hot Art Studios. It is located 150 yards from my Bed and Breakfast, The Spiral Stair Inn in the Hamlet of Romulus.

Hot Art Studios was once a laundromat and car wash many years ago. I purchased this and the adjoining building in April of 2017 and opened the art studio/gallery in December of 2017.

Come see my art and inventions. Create some of your own as well!

Casey was a great host! He took into consideration both my husband and my comfort level with pottery and welding. He was super friendly and always asked what we wanted to add a personal touch to our artwork! Definitely an awesome experience for couples!

Casey was an exceptional host. Very knowledgeable about “ throwing clay” very quick and easy pick up and he got right into the clay. For a short amount of time you left feeling like you could conquer any task. Very genuine human being! I would strongly recommend this experience

We had a great time during our experience with Casey, the pottery making was extremely fun! Casey is easy to converse with and teaches you the basics hands on so that you are involved from the start. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. You do pay for your made pieces, so be mindful of the additional cost. Overall it was a great experience that I would recommend.

Casey's Hot Art Studio was everything we could've hoped for and more. We were spinning our own bowls, plates and future wedding chalices within minutes thanks to Casey's expert instruction. Rummaging through his supplies to weld together our own bird made out of utensils and an antique iron was the cherry on top for an incredible first experience. Hop on the nearby Seneca Wine Trail once you're finished to cap off a day you won't forget.

If you are visiting the Finger Lakes, Casey’s “ceramics” class is absolutely mandatory. I use quotations because it’s so much more than that. For perspective, this is coming from a 25 year old guy who came with his girlfriend. This is one of the few activities that will truly captivate all ages. You’re the man, Casey!
