What you'll do

A purposeful journey with the Orang Asli

A 50-minute drive away from the capital of Malaysia, travellers will be embarking on a 3-4 hour trail through the protected rainforests of the Orang Asli Temuan community. Our Orang Asli guides will be teaching us indigenous knowledge such as identifying local flora and fauna and how they fit into their culture.

As we are trekking through the tall, dense jungle, you can expect to learn about the existing rainforest species and relax by a cooling waterfall. At the end of the experience, we will then be given access to the local guide's home where we enjoy a post-hike homecooked lunch of Temuan dishes with his family.

If you are a traveller looking to travel with a purpose, we guarantee a fulfilling Native experience while benefiting the communities you visit.

I enjoy obscure adventures, meeting different personalities, and becoming a steward to real stories. I first stumbled into Kampung Sungai Lalang in 2016 when I was pursuing my degree in civil engineering at the nearby university and have been a friend of the villagers ever since.

We at Native, a travel-based social enterprise, create community-based experiences hosted by the Orang Asli in Malaysia for world explorers to immerse themselves in colourful local cultures.

Our Native experiences are co-hosted with our fun-loving team: Faizul, Busi, Ebing, Zamairul, Sasha, Sean and Jason.

About the organization: Native

Native is on a mission to redefine what it means to be a "native" by providing a platform for the Orang Asli and travellers to tell their stories, cultivate genuine relationships, and learn about the different traditions in the world and their cultural strengths.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Native.

Where you'll be

We will be visiting Kampung Sungai Lalang Bahru, a Temuan tribe settlement on the fringes of Selangor. The village is surrounded by forest reserves, picturesque hills and flowing rivers. Our journey starts at the village base; we will then move to the foothills of Hutan Sungai Tekala, where the locals wait to guide travellers deeper into the hills to relax by the river side and visit other sites of cultural significance to the Orang Asli.

Got to finally learn about the things I can and can't eat in the jungle like I always wanted. If you're lucky Daniel might princess carry you across the river. AyahAbi has good machete skills. Best veggies I've had here. Top notch 👌

We had a wonderful experience visiting the Temuan village. We were warmly hosted in the village by Ayah Abi and Doni who guided through the jungle to a very special small river and waterfall. It was a beautiful, adventurous walk and all along the way Ayah Abi told us about the plants and vines in the jungle and all the ways that they are used by the Orang Asli. We were met in the morning by Daniel who picked us up from our accommodation and handed over to Sean who then drove us to the village. Sean was perfect as respectful translator and co host who was able to give us a deeper understanding of the history of Malaysia and the Orang Asli. The meal cooked by our village host was delicious. She especially prepared us vegetarian options.

We did the tour on our first day in Malaysia and it was an extremely good way to immediately get immersed in the great nature and village life just outside of Kuala Lumpur. The 2 local guides (Ayah Abi and Doni) who guided us from the local Orang Asli community told a lot about the local flora and fauna and also showed us how the villagers lived before moving to stone houses, which was partly thanks to the income from these tours could be built. We felt enormously welcome and it was really fantastic for us to go so deep into the jungle. We have not met anyone else during the entire trip, we could never have made this trip ourselves. Also the contact with Sean (one of the hosts on behalf of Native) was very nice. Because Daniel knew that we would travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, we also received a lot of tips on food, drinks and sights for there. Really great, I would recommend this experience to anyone.

A half day in the jungle with our Temuan guides Faizul and Busi was a great experience for our family of three. It was very special to trek through rough terrain, under the cover of native trees with clear running streams. The guides took it slow so we always felt comfortable and looked after. The temperature pleasantly dropped a few degrees once we left the open trail. We heard bird songs and saw some monkeys, all this within striking distance of KL. It was made possible due to Daniel’s passion for the social enterprise and his respect for the Temuan people and their living environment. Faizul and Busi are very knowledgeable and were happy to answer our questions (with Daniel interpreting) about the jungle, their way of life - trapping birds and the poisons used for their blowpipes, and their current status as native people of Malaysia. Like many indigenous cultures, they have a sad story of dispossession but all the same they are upbeat. We ended back at Faizul’s house where his wife (who we did not see) had prepared an excellent dish of smoked cat fish with sweet potato greens. What makes this trip stand out is that it is low key. We highly recommend the trip and wish the villagers all success for this highly worthwhile enterprise that brings benefits to the locals.

The trip was fun! Daniel is a good and experienced guide. Communication was great and the timing was also perfect so we were not in a rush to finish the trekking. Definitely recommended and would love to experience different track if any. Thanks Daniel!
