What you'll do

We will be going on a night hike to observe nocturnal animals in the wild. The hike will be HARD, we will be covering 4.5km and an altitude change of 271m from the trail head to the top of Bukit Kembara. We will be going over Bukit Kembara, circle around Ampang Impounding Reservoir, and hiking over Bukit Kembara again to head out. Some parts of the hike is steep and can be slippery if it has been raining.

The lowland forests around Ampang Impounding Reservoir is where we will see the most animals, I will be showing you some frogs, lizards, spiders, scorpions and if we are lucky we might be able to see some snakes and nocturnal mammals like civets. If you need help in photographing the animals we see, just hand me your cell phone / camera; I am a professional macro photographer that teaches photography on weekends :D

When we meet, I'll provide a short briefing to describe our route again and talk about some animals that we are expecting to see and tips for spotting animals. After the hike I will bring you to a nearby 7-Eleven where you can order a Grab car back to your accommodations. If you are having trouble with Grab, I could order one for you too.

Disclaimer: With compliance to Airbnb's Animal Welfare Guidelines, while we will be photographing the animals that we find, we will NOT be touching, petting, catching or restraining any animals during the night hike.

Meet your host, Steven

Hello! I am Steven Wong, nature guide and wildlife photographer. I have been going on nightwalks into the forest for 9 years and professionally guiding for two years.

Growing up watching Steve Irwin on Crocodile Hunter, gave me an appreciation for herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians). Picking up photography as a teenager, I've sought to document these amazing animals in their natural habitat. I enjoy guiding as it allows me to speak for these wonderful creatures, educating the public about their unique features and natural history.

A one-of-a-kind experience made especially enjoyable by a very enthusiastic guide. Stephen’s passion of all things reptile really came through with his keen eye and depth of knowledge, and the hike itself was challenging but enjoyable. The walking poles and headlamps were much appreciated! We saw many, many frogs and lizards and a surprisingly big rattlesnake. This experience really made our trip to KL feel unique.

The reward for this challenging hike is a greater diversity of frog and toad species that you will typically see in a single location. On our hike, Steven introduced me to several arachnids, bird, lizards, and civets too. He is sensitive to the wildlife and a great photographer. This is clearly his passion. How do we give Steven a nature series on cable television?

It was unforgettable experience. It was a bit of raining in the begging but Steven prepared a pincho for everyone! My partner had a backache and she had to stop climbing the hill on the way, however Steven really took care of us a lot and brought us back safely to the bottom of the hill. His hospitality and responsibility is amazing. If I have a chance to come to kuala lumpur nextime, i will try and complete 3 hours of a nightwalking with Steven. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes wild life and tropical animals.

Believe the hype. Steven took us into the woods and almost immediately began spotting frogs, lizards, insects, scorpions, and other neat animals. Steven spotted a rare Malayan Horned Frog, which is so well camouflaged that the three of us in the group could not see it even when we were looking right at it. We also saw a Reticulated Python, the longest snake in the world. Steven provided us with headlamps, hiking poles, and a backpack for our water and umbrellas. At the end of the tour he drove us to a 7-11 where we could request a Grab to our hotel.

I'm a solo traveller and it ended up just myself booked on the night hike! Steven was more than happy to still proceed and take me out. He is a wonderfully friendly, incredibly knowledgeable guy who took time to get to know me and share his interests and recommendations. We saw a lot of different wildlife - he knew exactly where to find specific species and could tell me all about them! 100% recommended :)
