What you'll do
We ride in luxury aboard an Audi Q7 SUV in into the central mountain region to the Tres Picachos rainforest and our first stop, the magical waters of Las Delicias waterfall. This secluded yet easy to get to waterfall will delight your senses. We climb through a secret spot to get to a platform behind the fall! There is a small pool where you can have a nice dip in the pure waters of the Cialito river. After we head to the town of Jayuya where we stop for lunch in a traditional puertorrican "BBQ" (rottiserie chicken). Then we continue to the barrio of Zama and go into the forest thru a jeep road and park the car next to the river, and continue on foot towards the our last stop, the Zama Acueduct petroglyph mural. Here we will go into detail on how we found and uncovered this mural and the history of the Taínos and their culture. After our archaeological visit we return to the car where you have the oportunity to take one last dip in the river. Finally we head back to the San Juan metro area to your place of stay.

As an archaeologist, I have always been fascinated by the petroglyphs carved by the Taínos. The most famous but hard to find petroglpyph is known as the sun of Jayuya. In my mission to see it for myself, I went to the mountain town of Jayuya. Here I met Efraín Reyes, who led me deep into the rainforest to see the famous sun. We became good friends and he showed me another place where a petroglyph mural was covered by a landslide and asked me lead an archaeological dig to uncover it. With the help of the community we dug it out, and know we provide guided tours to the mural.

Our excursion with Javi was easily the best part of our trip to PR. We hiked to a waterfall, visited Jayuya, met locals, tried new food and drinks, and so much more. Even though it wasn't in the schedule, Javi made time for us to visit a coffee plantation, as well. He had personal experiences, historical knowledge, and endless information about every location we went to. We finished the day feeling like we'd truly been immersed in the culture and we had learned so much! Don't hesitate, book this excursion, it is completely worth it!

If you are even considering this tour, do it. Javi was quick to reply when coordinating pick up, and our guide Elegna could not have made the experience better. She was a wealth of information about the history of the island beyond just facts and dates, she gave us a deeper understanding of the people of PR. She bonded with my boyfriend and I almost immediately, and we felt like old friends an hour in. She showed us AMAZING local food, took us to a waterfall, and to the petroglyphs by a gorgeous river and to a coffee hacienda. It was an incredibly special day. I cannot sing her praises highly enough.
