Animal experience hosted by Yaser

4 hours
Includes drinks, transportation, equipment
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English, Spanish, French

What you'll do

We will take a local taxi from Havana to Bacuranao beach about 14 km eastbound, 15 minutes ride). There we will talk about security measures for the activity, distribute the equipment required, warm up a few minutes and jump into the sea.
We will swim about 300 meters (over 1000 feets) to reach the coral reef and admire the beauty of the seabed and local coral life. We will also follow the trace of ancient shipwrecks in the area. It won't be necessary to do any immersions as everything can be seen from the surface.
Throughout the tour we will collect plastic waste from the reef to maintain a clean environment.
We will remain in the water between one and two hours.
Back in the beach, we will enjoy a tropical sandy beach and a local non-alcoholic drink for free. At the end we get a local taxi back to Havana.
Other things to note
This experience depends on the local weather conditions.
A locker service to leave our personal belongings is included.

I like maritime activities which I have devoted to for over 20 years. I'm passionate by the seabed and the colors we can discover on the coral reef. I'd love to share this experience with other people who visit my country.

This is a good experience for people who are very comfortable in the water. Our host is a good guy, who really walks the walk when it comes to doing his part to keep the reef and beach clean. He improvised well when things didn't work out as planned - such as when his driver didn't show up (he hailed a new cab) or when his buddy with the orange dive buoy couldn't be found on the beach (he inflated a highly visible life vest to use in its place). The swim itself was a good, invigorating swim. There's not much to see the first 50 yards or so, then the corals start to show up. At a certain point, you're swimming above large coral towers 15-20 ft tall, and it looks a lot like this world-class dive site called "Sand River" in Rarotonga. Then you will head out to various sections of a sunken shipwreck, submerged at various depths. In the shallows, the wreck is quite picturesque and you can see some colorful fish swimming around it. On the way back, you will take whatever trash you can find and the host will collect it for you in his bag. The visibility was really not good the day we went out, and still, we really enjoyed ourselves very much, having been the only ones who went out to that spot offshore. Bacuranao was a nice surprise - a pretty enough beach above water, and it wasn't too crowded the day we were there. There were a lot of athletes and soldiers training on the beach so we saw many impressively healthy young men jogging up and down the sand and doing laps by the shore. There were no other tourists. There's a small grocery at the beach for buying water, and a guard who will watch your valuables in a locker while you're in the water. Come dressed in your swimsuit already, and then bring towel a change of clothes for after the swim. I changed right under the towel, but if you need a changing room, I believe I did see one there.

It was a little rainy in the beginning when we met Yasser. By the time we reach the beach the weather were perfect. My girlfriend and I had a nice swim and snorkeling. Water visibility were perfect. We got to see lots of sea urchins and the ship wreck. Yasser is passionate about cleaning up the corals he dived well and manage to gather many rubbish at the seabed. I manage to only help very little as we're enjoying Haha. Yasser was also professional about our safety and making sure we had the right size flippers. Overall it was an enjoyable day at the beach and snorkeling.

The Tour with Yaser was fantastic. This was a long snorkeling trip and we swam considerable distances, which was a bit exhausting at the end but we'll worth it.

Yaser was great! Since there were 6 total in this experience, he also hired his friend Eddy to watch us so we felt very safe in the water with both Yaser and Eddy. They give you fins and a snorkel and mask. We visited in early February and the water was fairly warm and easy to stay in it for the hour and a half or so we were swimming. Yaser was able to give us some history of the area and of the shipwreck we visited. The reef is amazing and has many different fish. You can do some freediving near the shipwreck and really get close. It is also fun on the way back to pick up any trash near the reef and put it in the bag Yaser provides. Overall, one of the best snorkeling experiences I have been on and I highly recommend it! One note: Bring 1CUC per person to use the showers/bathroom afterward to change, if you want.

This experience was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Cuba. Yaser was awesome. The weather hadn't been great in the days leading up to our scheduled trip, so he re-arranged things and pushed it back a day so that we could have a proper experience and better conditions. The day we went it was still a bit cool (for him, not for us -- we are from Canada so it felt warm to me!), but he was still game to take us out in the water for at least 2 hours. I was nervous because it had been a long time since I'd been out swimming in the ocean, but he made me feel totally comfortable and safe. He showed and told us a lot of really cool things about the area we were in, the reef, the aquatic plants and animals, and we got to swim out and snorkel above a 100-year-old ship wreck, which was super cool in a totally creepy way. DEFINITELY do this experience. It was an excellent excellent day and Yaser was the best.
