What you'll do

Why don't you relax at home with a coffee while virtually “walking around“ Kyoto? Usually sight-seeing areas in Kyoto are packed full of tourists, but now there are few visitors due to the pandemic. Because of this very rare situation, I made a 1-hour video walking around Kyoto's major tourist area "Higashiyama" while it was unusually quiet. As a guest, you can watch this unique video while I explain various fascinating spots live. There will be a fun, interactive 10-point quiz interspersed along our journey! If you have any questions while you’re watching the video, I am happy to answer them live for you.

Higashiyama is a quaint area where the old streets of Kyoto and ancient atmosphere still remain. It is a must-see area for all sightseers to Kyoto, Japanese and non-Japanese alike. Besides famous sightseeing spots such as Yasaka Shrine, Yasaka Pagoda, Sannen-zaka Slope and Kiyomizu-dera Temple, I will also introduce you to some “secret spots” that are not well known.

You don't need to prepare or bring anything - just a cup of coffee or your favorite drink. Please relax and join us.
Other things to note
While guiding around, I keep showing the video on this tour. So I recommend a high-speed Internet access. Also, using a tablet or a PC is recommendable. A mobile phone screen is OK, but maybe too small for some people.

Hello! My name is Ryoji, a Japanese national, professionally qualified and fluent English-speaking tour-guide for tourists to Japan. I received my tour-guide license in 2016, but have been introducing Japan to non-Japanese people extensively for the past 23 years as a volunteer - I was lucky enough to win an award from the Japanese Government for this initiative. I am originally from Tokyo, but lived in Kyoto for 8 years until 2019 working as a professional tour guide there. You can see some reviews on this site: https://bit.ly/2XC32OP
It is my great pleasure to guide non-Japanese tourists from various countries and introduce them to the ancient city of Kyoto. It would be great if I could share the beauty of the city with people around the world, online. I hope to meet you all online and share some unforgettable places with you.

This experience really brought us into Kyoto! I wasn't sure what to expect with a digital tour, but Ryoji shot footage of the tour he normally walks people through and included so many tid bits and fun anecdotes that it really felt like we we on Kyoto!

Ryoji is a great guide who showed us many places to visit in Kyoto. This tour is especially great if you enjoy historical sites. We have many new places to go visit when we are able to travel to Kyoto in person. I highly recommend this tour!

It was a great experience! Ryoji showed us the tourist attractions, such as the temples and shrines, through the amazing video he took. He also introduced some fun facts and history about Kyoto. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a virtual tour in Kyoto during the pandemic.

This was a fantastic virtual "walk" to see all the top Kyoto sights. The walk was even more impressive by the fact that in Ryoji's video, you saw hardly anyone else walking around, when normally the streets would be full of people! We hit all the main shrines, temples, and parks, and even saw a Starbucks with low-profile signage hidden away in a heritage building. Ryoji answered all questions, and even had some for us which he presented in a fun quiz format. I hope I can visit this beautiful city someday, but for now this is perfect. Recommended!

Excellent tour. It exceeded my wife and my expectations. Our tour guide, Ryoji was very knowledgeable and very thorough. It was my birthday gift from my daughter and I really enjoyed it. Anil Shah, North Carolina, USA.
