What you'll do

Rise and shine with the birds, water fowl and wildlife at the San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Three hundred acres of freshwater wetlands beckon us to explore and photograph.

It will be hard to remember that we are in the heart of suburbia with twelve miles of trails and 200 species of birds to capture with our cameras and in our memories. San Joaquin Marsh is not only an exceptional place to relax and reflect, but is an environmental means to naturally clean urban runoff before the water reaches the ocean.

Take this perfect opportunity to learn more about your camera, work on specific photography techniques, or simply enjoy nature with other photographers and guests. Julie will be the photo angel on your shoulder to guide you with tips and tricks for better photography.

We will walk some of the most active trails to see the most birds and wildlife.
Other things to note
Bring your camera, charged batteries, memory card, hat, sunscreen, water, comfortable shoes. Tripod and circular polarizing filter optional.

Be sure to enter facility from Campus Drive/not Michelson.

Julie was there to guide us on the marsh with photography tips and tricks and real help learning our camera settings. It was pretty early in the morning, but well worth it. It was quiet and no other people around...unusual in busy Orange County. We were able to take photos that were well composed and "keepers". We learned to take pictures deliberately, not just randomly. Julie made sure we were not rushed but covered the entire marsh during our experience. There were so many photo ops! And, not just birds. We discussed composing our photos, talked about negative space and how to "see" it. What a wonderful way to spend an early morning. I will definitely consider coming to this place again - especially with Julie!
