What you'll do

Starting from Chinatown MRT station at the heart of Chinatown, we'll take a leisurely stroll through various parts of Chinatown, and I will relate to you quaint places and facts that only a former denizen can. From the perspective of a child who grew up here in the 70's in her formative years, the Chinatown etched in my memory is a vastly different one. Come join me and get to know a Chinatown of a bygone era.

I am a trained tourist guide and I am passionate about sharing the history and culture of Singapore to people from all walks of life, from all over the world.

As I was born and raised in Chinatown as a child, I know every nook and corner of this area. I would be able to provide with a very personal account of my experiences growing up in this area, including my encounters with colourful characters like prostitutes, Samsui women, opium smokers, secret society members and more!

Where you'll be

We'll meet at Chinatown MRT Station Exit A, right at the heart of Chinatown, and proceed from there.

You'll get to see old and new forms of public housing in Singapore, get a rare glimpse into the lives of Chinatown’s early residents, visit one of the oldest food centres in Singapore and take a walk down "sei yan gai" (死人街), or 'Dead People Street'. You'll also see a gentrified part of Chinatown.

We'll end at Maxwell Hawker Centre.

Jasmine was very nice and kind, she was flexible and i had the excursion at the time slot that was originally not in her schedule. I was amazed when she told me about her life in the 60s and 70s in the chinese quarter, the story from the insider was very valuable for me.

We had a wonderful tour of Chinatown with Jasmine. She is very enthusiastic and energetic and shared a lot of her family’s own experiences of living in Chinatown (something you wouldn’t get in a guidebook!). It was also great to try the traditional breakfast. Thank you Jasmine!

Jasmine was so warm and friendly right from the start and it wasn't long before I knew I had made my first friend in Singapore. I had been staying in Chinatown for a few days but it was so much better getting to know it through her and her childhood stories. I was lucky enough to have her to myself so she was happy to adapt the tour to things I was interested in, she even helped me find a luggage scale! I highly recommend this experience with Jasmine!
