What you'll do

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has one of the most fascinating Jewish cultures and history in Europe. It is a community that still flourishes in spite of the many difficulties it has had throughout its long history. I would like to invite you to an interactive conversation, where I will share with you stories about this community, from the time of the Austrian empire, through the Holocaust and the communist era until our present time. I will do this through a bit of historical context, several images, and by sharing my own family stories. As part of the generation that was born at the end of the communist era, raised in the hopeful 90s and 2000s, I have had my own personal journey through understanding my family’s background, the stories of my grandparents who have survived the holocaust, those of my parents who grew up in communism, and all the other stories from which I gradually started to build my own identity. The experience will be the virtual adaptation of my offline tour, which you can learn about and see its reviews here: https://www.airbnb.hu/experiences/181441.
If you would like to attend, but the times don't work for you, please feel free to reach out to me, and I will do my best to make your requested times happen!
Other things to note
As this experience will be an interactive conversation, please make sure you have access to a camera and a microphone. I will aslo show you some pictures, so probably a laptop, or a bigger screen is the best. Also, it is quite important to have a good level of English.

I am a freelance psychologist and singer. I guide culture walks in the Jewish quarter of Budapest, Hungary. I have been guiding groups for quite a few years now, and in the past two years through Airbnb. The Jewish quarter of Budapest is my passion, I have spent many years now studying about it, as well as discovering my own family background through it. I have also learned a lot from the people who have been on my tours and challenged my mind over and over again. They really inspired me to think about the real essence of this neighborhood and community. As a psychologist, I am always very interested in my guests’ stories, and their take on the events we talk about.

We both had a lovely experience with Dora. She unlocked the secrets behind a part of Budapest which had always seemed mysterious to me. I learned a lot and she really made us fee included and a part of her journey. She also shared experiences and photographs of her own family, which was fascinating.

Our hour-and-a-half session with Dora flew by and we wanted more! She wove historical and personal family experiences together for a multi-layered perspective, often engaging participants with brief “quizzes” and pausing to inquire if there were any questions. We learned so much and are grateful to Dora for her knowledge, sensitivity and ability to draw people in.

What a wonderful adventure! Dora is very knowledgable and it was especially wonderful to hear her person stories. Enjoyed this very much and loved sharing it with my son and daughter in law.

This was an outstanding experience. Dora was so personable and really took the time to answer all of our questions. I came away learning SO MUCH about the Jewish experience in Hungary. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone.

We embarked on this experience as a birthday gift for our 93-year-old father/grandfather. Three generations enjoyed it tremendously (and the fourth was happy painting while the rest of us were glued to our screens.) Dora is a talented storyteller and a terrific host. She personalized the tour for us and made everyone feel welcome. We all learned a lot and had a good time. I would recommend this very highly for anyone interested in European Jewish history.
