What you'll do

Batik and Shibori are both culturally rich and intricately complex dyeing techniques from South East Asia. In this workshop, you will become a designer for a day! After choosing the preferred method, you will learn the process of designing and making batik or folding and dyeing textiles using the shibori methods. Batik is an ancient and famous wax-resit method of dyeing textiles in Southeast Asia that uses metal blocks or a small "pipe" like utensil to draw or block designs with hot wax. In this workshop, you will block or draw designs using melted wax on fabric to create patterns and designs, and you will then paint dye colors of your choice on the textiles. After the dyes dry, the fabric is washed in boiling water to remove the wax and reveal the original fabric color along with the new layer of design. You will then get to go home with a unique batik scarf or coffee tumbler that you designed and created yourself. If you choose the Shibori method of design, you will learn various versions of tying and dyeing textiles using rubber bands and pieces of wood to create more organic and surprising designs. At the end, you will take home your own personalized Batik Boutique product.

Amy

I am a dreamer and problem solver who moved to Malaysia 10 years ago. I founded Batik Boutique boutique to empower artisans and women. I also love coffee and spending time with my husband and three kids, who were born in Malaysia. And I stay up way too late at night thinking through new ideas for products and stalking Instagram. I hope you'll find time to stop by our studio and learn about dyeing textiles and making products with us from the famous Malaysian art form called Batik. I think you'll have fun and love our workshop! Hope to see you. My team will be hosting this workshop.
