What you'll do

Batik and Shibori are both culturally rich and intricately complex dyeing techniques from South East Asia. In this workshop, you will become a designer for a day! After choosing the preferred method, you will learn the process of designing and making batik or folding and dyeing textiles using the shibori methods.

Batik is an ancient and famous wax-resit method of dyeing textiles in Southeast Asia that uses metal blocks or a small "pipe" like utensil to draw or block designs with hot wax. In this workshop, you will block or draw designs using melted wax on fabric to create patterns and designs, and you will then paint dye colors of your choice on the textiles. After the dyes dry, the fabric is washed in boiling water to remove the wax and reveal the original fabric color along with the new layer of design. You will then get to go home with a unique batik scarf or coffee tumbler that you designed and created yourself.

At the end, you will take home your own personalized Batik Boutique product.

I am a dreamer and problem solver who moved to Malaysia 10 years ago. I founded Batik Boutique boutique to empower artisans and women. I also love coffee and spending time with my husband and three kids, who were born in Malaysia. And I stay up way too late at night thinking through new ideas for products and stalking Instagram. I hope you'll find time to stop by our studio and learn about dyeing textiles and making products with us from the famous Malaysian art form called Batik. I think you'll have fun and love our workshop! Hope to see you.

My team will be hosting this workshop.

You can participate every single step to get a unique batik stuff by yourself! Some beautiful patterns related to KL, which makes the scarf I made more memorable. Just be aware of the hot wax!

My wife and I had a rare experience while visiting KL City by attending the Batik workshop. I mad her a scarf and she made me a journal cover. We had a chance to understand the background of batik and differences. We also got to practice in paper and then in fabric to have a better idea of our final product presentation. Thanks to our great instructor and to Amy for the great experience. Batik Boutique your story inspired us and we hope you grow internationally and support as many women as you can.

This was a great experience in KL learning the process of Batik. The scarf I made looked fantastic when I was done. I highly recommend the experience, especially if you have a few extra days in KL or want to learn the process of Batik. The boutique is also a great shopping experience! I ended up finding some great gifts for family at home.

First, I have to say that I signed up last minute (and by myself) and Amy made sure that I still got an appointment as it suited my schedule. I had fun, learned a lot, and I had a lovely time talking with my instructor. The snacks were a lovely touch and I felt like I really connected with my instructor during this activity. They also give you a coupon for their shop and the woman working there was so helpful and extremely friendly as well. My scarf turned out beautifully, but I do wish I could’ve had a better idea of how the colors would layer. I would’ve liked a bit more contrast. I know it can be hard to anticipate what will happen with the dye and wax, and they had samples, but I think I would’ve wanted a slightly clearer idea regarding the range of possibilities of what might happen picking the colors that I did.

It was great to learn about the Batik style at Batik Boutique. The teacher was very kind, helpful and welcoming. The workshop was set in a lovely space and being just a group of two it was easy to ask questions and felt very personalised. Such a lovely way to spend a Saturday and learn a new skill. Thank you.

I made my own silk scarf with batik method. The whole experience was great. The instructor will let me do all the work and encourages to involve in. I am really pleased with this experience and willing to recommend to those who are interested with foreign culture and crafts. My wife and I are willing to enroll again when we come back to KL.
