What you'll do
Waddle with me into the fascinating world of one Africa's most enigmatic—and endangered bird species
Over the course of a fun and informative chat /drawing class you’ll discover little-known facts and amazing insights into the unique lifestyle of our penguins and the conservation challenges they face using photos, graphics, video and an interactive quiz.
Your completed artwork at the end will form part of a global penguin conservation project and so by participating in this experience, you’ll be directly contributing to the conservation of African penguins!
This can be added to your home-school schedule as a biology, conservation, and art class, or it can be a fun way to connect as a family apart during lock down. This is also a great experience for corporate teams working remotely or as a celebration of birthdays and special events.
This is a "Family Experience" so you might be booking into a group where 1 or more children are present - book a Private Experience for just your group.

Penguins and I go way back. A lifetime penguin conservationist, my career was inspired at the age of 9 when I encountered one of the first pairs of African penguins to ever nest on South African soil. I wrote a story about them that got published, thus beginning my journey with penguins now going on 38 years (and counting). I’m a widely published journalist, author, honorary ranger, shark-loving surfer and host of the popular airbnb offline experience 'Penguin Walk with A Conservationist' and co-host of the 'Penguin Paddle' and 'Kelp Forest Safari'.
The unfinished story of the endangered African penguin is currently being written and I invite you to be a part of it…

Jon opens with penguins, but before you know it you'll find yourself immersed in the real and engaging world of wildlife conservation in South Africa. I recommend this experience for anyone who cares about the well-being of penguins, sharks, snakes, birds and understands the power of tourism (online and off) for social change.

We spent 90 minutes with Jon as a team building experience - we just wanted an escape given we've all been working from home for a year and are feeling tired of the monotony of our day to day - and Jon definitely provided that break :). He had us in giggles with his anecdotes and we loved the videos in particular. We also got quite competitive over our penguin pictures after wards. Overall a very chill, easy to engage, inclusive team activity for a Friday afternoon.

Jon, aka "Shrimpy" (his penguin name) was AMAZING! Who knew that for a long time people thought penguins were fish!? What brings this experience over the top is Shrimpy's amazing sense of humor, seriously give this man a microphone and a stage! Informative, passionate, caring, Jon as I'll now refer to him takes you on a journey of conservation, danger, even suspense and you root for all the wonderful penguins and learn so many endearing things about them. You'll even learn *your* penguin name! Mine is Fishface, go figure! Great for families, groups, kids and people who care about the animal kingdom. Thanks Shrimpy, and hats off to Sushi, Shrimpy's penguin pal!
