What you'll do

We'll begin with an introduction to each other and the map of the park, then begin hiking on a well-used dirt road in the open sunshine. After about 20 minutes, we'll drop onto a single-track, heavily-forested trail where we most likely will not see other people. I'll stop frequently to point out various interesting flora and fauna; maybe we'll even see a banana slug! We'll take time to silently listen to the sounds of the forest and leave a hope, wish or prayer in a rock garden. Along the way you will learn how this redwood forest re-grew after being clear-cut in the mid 1800's to fuel lime kilns to extract lime out of limestone. We’ll cross several small streams - all spring fed - and visit a natural spring. I'll point out the different types of terrain and the types of plants that grow in each and I promise a few surprises along the way!

As an avid hiker and lover of nature, I have lived in Santa Cruz for almost 30 years and have hiked the better part of the Santa Cruz side of the mountain range. Being in the forest gives me a sense of belonging and rejuvenation. Especially after traveling, being in nature can de-stress you in ways that nothing else can. I adore Santa Cruz and I’d like to share the part of it that most tourists never see. I will tell you about the local flora and fauna, and give some insider history and perspectives about Santa Cruz in general. If you like to hike but don't want to have to pay attention to trail maps and worry about getting lost, this is a great way to experience a beautiful section of the Santa Cruz mountains

Where you'll be

I’ll meet you at the end of Spring Street off High Street. After a brief introduction, we’ll hike along a hillside with a beautiful view of Santa Cruz. Then, after about a mile, the trail will take us into the redwood forest. Along the way we will see a secret rock garden, an ancient lime kiln and an active spring . Prepare for three hours of active hiking with two small breaks.
