I have been studying Jewish Heritage in Izmir ( Ancient name was Symirna ) for a long time for my Jewish guests. It is very well known that Izmir was one of the most important homelands for Jews who were exiled from Spain in 15th century and still now. I have had investigation and conferences on Izmir and Ephesus Jewish heritage sites from that time being. There are Synagogues from 16th century in the middle of the trading and residential areas. You will still have a chance to witness the way the Jews lived. Even some migrated Turkish Jewish families can still have chance to trace back for their ancestors at the cemetery’s documents.

Ilker is a lovely man with great local knowledge. We spent the day exploring the city and he was very up for my idea to move around on bikes. This way we got to enjoy the fresh sea air as we went between the sights and sampled the culinary delights of Izmir. We had great conversation and learned a lot about modern Turkish life as well as the history of the city. Well worth having Ilker as your guide to Izmir if you’re visiting.
