What you'll do
Visit our four acre mini-farm right on The Creeper Trail and the South Fork of the Holston River. You'll meet all eight of our donkeys (six miniatures, one standard, and one critically-endangered mammoth) and get to see their individual personalities and herd dynamics up close and personal. You'll learn about equine safety, the importance of the donkey in history, each animal’s personal story (most are rescues), their daily care, and ways they're used in animal-aided therapy. You'll also be able to brush, pet, and take pictures with our beloved pets.
***Per our insurance, the minimum age of participants is twelve years old.
***Upon arriving to our farm, you will be asked to sign a liability waiver to participate in this experience. This keeps our farm safe and our insurance company happy. Thank you in advance so much for understanding.
***You are required to wear a mask when you are on our farm. Because we care about your safety--and ours--we cannot allow you to participate in this experience if you do not wear a mask. Thank you so much for helping to protect us--and yourselves. We're all in this together.
If you need accommodations due to a disability or personal preference, please let us know.

I am the co-owner of Abingdon Donkey Lodge and the caretaker of our herd of eight donkeys. I am a 20-year educator and a best-selling author in the field of PTSD and secondary trauma. I also teach writing workshops that combine memoir writing with equine therapy. I first became interested in miniature donkeys when exploring animal therapy as a treatment for trauma survivors, myself included. I found miniature donkeys to be much calmer, less reactive, more inquisitive, and easier to bond with than their 1000+ pound full-size horse relatives. I met my first miniature donkey four years ago, and that very day I knew these sweet, fuzzy, compassionate, comical long-eared equines would be a lifetime passion. I can't wait to share them with you!

We had the most wonderful time at the Abingdon Donkey Lodge! Christal was an amazing host and made us feel more than welcome the minute we arrived at the property. The house itself is stunning, and of course the donkeys themselves are the stars of the show! They were so friendly and hilarious - I could've spent multiple hours snuggling with them!

Amazing! This visit was amazing. The donkeys were beyond sweet. We learned so much about these amazing creatures. Christal made accommodations for my husband's difficulty with standing. If you have an elderly relative or someone with ambulatory difficulty, message her and she will likely help so this person can enjoy the experience. We will be going back.
