What you'll do

Borrow a pair of my binoculars & join me to learn the meditative joys of bird watching.

Crystal Springs is home to 100+ species of birds, secretive otters, chunky squirrels & a beautiful rhododendron garden surrounded by a lake.

We'll meet at the entrance of Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, where I will pay for your entrance fee.
I'll provide you with binoculars, teach you how to use them, and we will explore a mile of paved (and compacted gravel) trails. I'll teach you a few bird calls as well as point out the different species we see and hear, and answer any questions you have about bird watching and birds.

This tour is designed for beginners, but I welcome all levels of bird enthusiasts! Want to focus on birding by ear, bird photography? Let me know!

In our two hours of bird watching we should see between 15 and 25 different species of birds, many plants, and possibly an otter, mink, nutria or even a squirrel.

Accessibility is my priority so please know I am willing to adapt my experience based on your level of mobility/ability.

If you don’t see a time that fits your schedule, or if you're a group larger than 5, contact me and I’ll try to accommodate you!

My author name is Seymore Gulls and I wrote Neighborhood Birding 101. I've been bird watching for 10 years and have been guiding for 1. I love birds and teaching people about them. The goal of my book, and in life, is to make bird watching accessible to everyone and to help others enjoy the beauty of nature.

Worth every minute of the two hour visit and tour! A patient host who shares so much information, answers questions and is a very personable tour guide. Highly recommend!

Eric is as personable as he is knowledgeable, that is, extremely! I saw and heard more birds and other critters than I would if I had gone alone. Because of this experience I get more out of my future explorations of Portland and of Oregon.

Great excursion! I'm an intermediate amateur birder, but beginners would have a great time on this trip too. the park is lovely and easy to walk. Eric was a great host and pointed out specific markings to help with ID, and he was good at auditory ID too. Highlights included a flock of American White Pelicans, Osprey, Red Tailed Hawk, Green Heron, Great Blue Heron, and an otter.

Great local experience in Portland and awesome location. Was fun and informative and good for birding at any level and met new friends. :)

That was very fun! We saw so many birds and a surprise mink. I got some good nuggets for identifying some of the birds we saw, including ways to remember the songs for easier identification. Eric kept it fun and interesting. I’m very much a novice birder but left feeling like I know quite a bit more. I think friends that aren’t into birding at all would have even enjoyed it! I definitely recommend this experience!

This was such an enjoyable experience! Eric is super knowledgeable about birds and created an inviting and lighthearted experience that made the time really fly by. We learned to identify birds by their songs and appearance and also fun facts about them. Crystal Springs is a beautiful location filled with not just birds, but we also saw a family of otters, a nutria and a mink! The guided trip got me excited to learn more about identifying birds!
