What you'll do

If you are looking for a unique farm-to-table experience in the rustic, greener, wilder side of urban Singapore, you've come to the right place!

We will welcome you to our organic farm, giving you an overview of our values and practices at Ground-Up Initiative. We will take you on a short sensory farm tour to learn about various indigenous and naturalised vegetables, flowers and herbs.

You are welcome to be creative and forage for your bread fillings/toppings. Some delicious possibilities are blue pea flowers (to colour your dough), mulberry (for sweetness), and basil (for spice).

Then we will kick off our wood-fired bread-making workshop. You will be taught the process of basic bread making: mixing ingredients, hand-kneading the dough, proofing, shaping, and baking.

We will then bake the bread in the earth oven. Each participant gets to pack home two types of bread: -
1. A flavourful, crusty, sourdough bread, baked using artisan methods and mixed with your very own assortment of nuts, dried fruits and spices

2. A classic sweet and soft cinnamon roll that smells and tastes incredible from the buttery blend of cinnamon spice and caramelised brown sugar

Please bring containers that are big enough to pack home the two breads.

Throughout the experience we keep to a group of 5 including the instructor, wear masks, keep surfaces clean, and practice social distancing.
Other things to note
While you will be under shelter when making pizzas, the farm tour will be conducted outdoors. You might experience the heat and humidity of a Saturday morning, but nothing too intense. We will remind you to take breaks and hydrate often. Prepare a cap, mosquito repellent and sunblock if needed.

Hello there, we are Xiaoyun and Kim, two enthusiastic volunteers who are pioneering the idea of a farm-to-table, foraging-plus-baking experience at Ground-Up Initiative, a nonprofit in Singapore.

Xiaoyun is a young sustainability advocate, volunteer connector and farm educator with GUI. In her spare time she plays sports, reads, and goes on night walks.

Kim is a passionate artisan baker, with a diploma in baking. When she first came to GUI with her company's team building event, she was impressed with the open, rustic space, and decided to conduct baking workshops using the earth oven here.

Through hosting this experience, we hope to promote a more sustainable and mindful relationship with nature through our food. Come join us in our nature sanctuary, away from the typical pigeon hole dwelling in a concrete jungle
