What you'll do

Together we will walk along the thin line of poverty and wellfare. We will discuss the topic of homelessness in the most liveable city in the world - while walking through the center of Vienna.

This is not a sightseeing tour - this is a tour about life.

The content of the tour is homelessness, its challenges and the solutions that the city provides - and I'll share with you my personal insights and experiences of being homeless. You can ask me any question about homelessness that you might have.

We will pass places that are related to homelessness and will make you realize the contrasts of the city.

We love to educate you! If you are interested in alternative tours and in socio-politics, then you will definitely enjoy this experience.

**Please note that the tour is NOT a sight seeing tour and NEITHER visits shelters or expose homeless people. We are affected by homelessness ourselves and we reject social voyeurism, thus neither other homeless people are on display, nor former beds of guides or other homeless people are shown.**

The experience will be guided in english.

We are Nina and Barbara from Shades Tours. Shades Tours is a social business that employs homeless people who are trained to become alternative tour guides. We started working for Shades Tours while we were homeless, some of us still are. We are working for Shades Tours to explain you what homelessness is like, what challenges there are and what solutions the social system offers - but also in order to improve and stabilize our living situation.

Our goal is to reduce prejudices and to open up a new perspective on the city!

Eine tolle Tour in Wien. Unser Guide hatte eine Menge zu erzählen und wir haben alle viel neues erfahren. Auf jeden Fall eine Bereicherung Wien mal aus einem anderen Blickwinkel zu sehen.

Worth for every one who wishes to know more than the touristic Vienna. Homelessness is never desirable but the way homelessness is handled in Vienna could inspire many other cities in Europe (and elsewhere)

For sure it was a unique and great experience. The guide was homeless herself before and she is very knowledgeable about Homelessness in Vienna based on their statistics. We asked many questions, and she answered every question politely for us. We were able to have a new perspective and other insight*s* into Vienna, not only touristic activity. However, what would be great is if we could see more actual facilities or some related place s (Mostly we were listening to some places in the city) or interact with other actual homeless people since this tour is almost input from the guide. Thank you very much and we are looking forward to your future tours!

This educational walking tour was insightful, meaningful and eye opening. Of all of the walking tours that I have been on around the world, this was the best. The tour gets you involved and makes you think of how people live, whether it is in Vienna or where you live currently.

Very useful and meaningful time spent with Barbara - professional, intelligent and softly spoken lady who lead us through the possible outcomes in anyone's life and show how well the social system in Austria has been established! The tour works out as all round world experience exchange group openly discussing obvious issues in the society.
